A lot of people i hang around say that either the draft should or shouldn't be reinstated, but i have yet to develope an opinion. I dont know much about the needs we have for a draft, or the problems it would cause.
It would be very helpful if someone could tell me, with good reasoning, examples, or facts to back up your argument.
Thanks

I can think of no good reason to reinstate the draft... A country worth fighting for doesn't need it (there will be enough volunteers for any just war).

you should comprehend that it will be Congress, no longer President Bush, who could convey on the style of degree. The President won't be able to reinstate a draft. He can propose the idea, yet when maximum human beings of Congress does no longer help it, then there is not any conscription. that talk about reinstating the draft is only nonsense. you've fairly no reason to worry being conscripted, at your youthful age. If there ever is a conscription and also you worry you may be eligible, besides the indisputable fact that, you may as well enlist in the previous being conscripted: this manner, you'll have slightly extra administration over what precisely you'll do interior the military.

This isn't a very bright question. The draft won't be reinstated for a long time. There is no need for the draft even the George Bush wanted to send an additional 300,000 troops to Iraq, it will not be reinstated.

The U.S has about 1.2 million active troops and 1.1 million reservist.

I do like the idea of a draft since many people will know how to fight and handle a weapon, when they return to civilian life. But not many people are prepared for a draft, now a days everyone is naive.

If we were to goto war with Iran, I don't see much of a need for
a draft. Unless it were to lead to WW3, if so, then say hello to the draft.

If you do have a draft then the military would grow. It would not be a quality military. Volunteers are the best. A volunteer is either trying to better themselves, their family, their nation, or even all three. This means volunteers are more motivated than draftees.

edit:

The military does not target the "impoverished". When I joined, I was upper middle class. "Impoverished" people are usually not smart enough for the military and even if they are smart enough, they are too apathetic to do something with their lives.

Never! It didn't work before and it won't work now.

I was drafted in '68 and sent to 'Nam, as an individual. That's all we had at the time 547,000 individuals.

With our service now, they are sent as units. They have trained together and know each other.

In 'Nam, we had to figure everyone out and how they were before we even had a chance at being cohesive

How many wealthy Americans are subject to the draft? Answer me that. The draft only sends the poor to fight as cannon fodder in some mid-east supposed nation. Why do US armed forces recruiters actively target impoverished areas to gain recruits? Iran is on the table right now, if need be, there will be a draft to support this demented cause.

We have lost to many! Perplexing because at this time we have our young men and women fighting in a war and no mother wants to hear the word draft at this time. I,m not sure if we should still be there but as long as we are we have to support them with money to ensure there safety.
BUT I feel that our kids are so spoiled and pampered I would not object to one yr. mandatory for them once out of high school. I mean regardless of what their income is, if only to help them mature into responsible men and women, in a time of peace if we ever have one.
The war in Iraq is much to complex for me to figure out I wish all our boys and girls could come home.
The men in our family have served in wars back to world war 1 My father brothers husband son and now a grandson all have served there country and returned home to us by the grace of god.
Now my question is do we have to fight Iraq's war which is becoming a civil war as far as I am concerned. We freed them from tierney so is it not there responsibility to settle there own problems as our government has to? I don't think now is the time for a mantaory draft making it to easy to send more of our young into a battle which i feel is not ours to fight at this time.

I think we should have the draft only in times of an official declaration of war. The current administration seems use the word 'war' only when it's convenient for them do so.

The question basically boils down to this...

Under what circumstances does the government have the right to take someone off the street, who has not committed any crime, and compel them into service where their life is at risk.

Personally, I say never. But then, I don't approve of govt-mandated slavery in any form.
