I've a lower molar which was already filled many years ago. There is no pain or trouble at this moment, but as it does not look nice because of the fillings and to prevent further or future decay. Crowning is said to prevent or protect from future decay of the tooth. Is it good to place a crown on it, can I skip the root canal treatment since there is no pain or trouble on the tooth at this moment??? Will it give any trouble in future and for many years down the road, if there is no root canal treatment on the tooth???

Also, drinking cola and sugary beverages (like hot chocolate, milk & cereal, which usually have sugar content) are bad for teeth as these often causes the tooth decay. Will rinsing the mouth with tapwater (without brushing as no food intake) prevent the decay?? (I do at least 2 brushings and 1 flossing per day, however, I do need to take these beverages in between meals).

Will anyone please give good suggestion and advice. Thanking you in advance.

Sure it is possible to place a crown on a tooth that has not had a root canal. Probably more of my crowns are on vital teeth than those tha thave had root canal treatment.

I am a Dental Assistant for an Endodontic, and all he does is Root Canals. I have never had a patient say it hurt. There is no blood, it's all inside your tooth. If dental injections are okay for you, thne you'll sail through. You can ask for pain medication for after the procedure. I had one done a few years back and it was simple. The apin afterwards is just because a Root Canal is sort of an invasive procedure. Your mouth has to be open for some time and your jaw might get sore. But you wont feel any cold sensitivity after the Root Canal, it's great. Go eat a buncg of ice cream!!! Good luck

As long as the tooth doesn't need a root canal. I've had a couple of teeth that had major fillings and over time the fillings would start to break out (I use porcelain instead of silver and it isn't as strong). To keep it from getting worst they needed a crown to protect it. Crowns are expensive and are not used just as a prevention of cavities. When crowns are put on most of the tooth is ground down. Best way to take care of it is to see the dentist regularly. If you don't have insurance then you may be able to call around, I have found a few dentists that have their own in house insurance as well as their own financing plans to make payments. Hope this helps some.

Yes, it is common practice to place a crown without root canal treatment.

It is very possible to do that...i doubt your insurance co would pay for it though. I would suggest to wait until you have some sort of discomfort on the tooth. If you put a crown on now later down the road if you are not brushing and flossing properly it could lead to decay under the crown.

About the drinking thing..It will help some what..but their is no substitution for brushing.Good luck!

I AGREE WITH DR. SAM, MOST TEETH OUT IN PUBLIC, THAT HAVE CROWNS, HAVE NOT HAD A ROOT CANAL.

THIS TOOTH MAY NEE ED A CROWN IN THE FUTURE. IF THE RESTORATION IS STILL SERVICEABLE AND THERE IS NO DECAY, I WOULD LEAVE IT ALONE.

THE COLA AND THE OTHER SUGARY DRINKS WILL DO MORE DAMAGE TO YOUR TEETH THAN OTHER DRINKS.
