Can anyone please tell me, or give me a link to information about setting up a home boarding business? I'd like to start a boarding business at my house for dogs (no need to build a special kennel, so no permit for that is needed), I just need to know if I need to get permission from the city in order to have dogs stay at my house (10 or so at one time). Thank you

I'm not sure what the specific laws are in your area, but in the city where I live anyone who has more than three dogs must have a kennel license, even if they are just pets. I would imagine that most areas have a similar requirement.

If you live in an area where you have neighbors, that may also be problem. Some dogs bark a lot and are very noisy. I used to work at an animal hospital that boarded dogs and we weren't allowed to let the dogs outside between certain times due to noise ordinances.

You should also look into things like taxes, business license, etc. if you haven't already.

Another important thing not to overlook is considering what you will require of dogs to be boarded. For example, will they all need to be up to date on their kennel cough vaccine and have an intestinal parasite test that was negative within the past year so that dogs don't get infected with worms while they are at your kennel?

What do you mean no need to build a special kennel?

I've always taken my Great Danes to daycare so I know they have exercise daily when I'm working. I'd never take them to a place with 'no special kennel'.

The kennel I take my dogs to has both an indoor and an outdoor exercise area...both of which are completely secure. During the winter or when the weather is poor the dogs play in the indoor area which looks like an indoor horse arena, but features infrared heating system.

When the weather is good the dogs have access to an outdoor (again totally secure) exercise area.

The kennel also employs college aged kids that supervise the play of the dogs to prevent any injuries from occurring due to fighting etc.

All this costs me a whopping 10 bucks a day.

If you're serious about setting up a boarding business you'll have to realize you NEED specialized kennels, an exercise area, etc. If you do no specialized kennel set ups...what will you do the first time 3 people don't show up to pick their dogs up on a given night?

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Running Your Own Boarding Kennels by David Cavill
* Building, Buying and Operating a Boarding Kennel by James Krack
* Kennel Building and Management (Howell Reference Books) by Mario Migliorini

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

You should start by trying dog walking and dog sitting / house sitting. Make the same amount of money, offer more services and leave the mess at someone elses house. No overhead!!!

Ask your police department or your local vet. The laws for this sort of thing are different for every city.
