I live in Seattle and looked for close to a month on www.petfinder.com for a dog in a similar situation. These are pound pups or rescue dogs, but if you start your search there then you will find what you are looking for. It's hard to go to the pound and some of the rescue groups require a home inspection, but they are trying to do what is best for everyone. Dogs should be part of the family both inside and outside.
Your kids will appreciate rescuing a dog, and your dog will love you all the more. My family found a siberian husky mix that was a year old. She has some training but we have been working with her to learn more. I'm not saying that a husky is the right mix for your family, just that petfinders helps you look for animals that are good with kids and would fit in your family. Good luck with your search.

I also think you should get your dog from a local pound or shelter. I have 2 lab mixes and they are short hair and great with kids. My lab mixes were from a shelter and are not as big as normal sized labs. I highly reccomend this breed to a first time owner or anyone looking for a mellow, easy going dog. They also love the outdoors(at least mine do) so that wouldn't be a problem to keep them outside sometimes.

My suggestion would be to get a dog from the pound. They need homes more than anything and you can find the perfect dog for your lifestyle by the personality and energy, not just by the breed. You could find a dog that fits what you want in a dog. They are cheaper to by as well, and usually are already fixed. If they aren't they will just charge you an extra $20 for it. Please check with you local ASPCA or Shelter to find a dog, not a pet store or breeder. These dogs need homes more than anything! If you don't take that advice, at least get them fixed so you don't contribute to the overpopulation of unwanted animals. Good luck with your new dog!!

Pacific Northwest and you want to keep a short hair dog outside -?? The only thing coming to mind here is a great need to tell you that can't be a doofus your entire life!! You need Scoby do - only a cartoon dog could survive under those conditions.

the problem is with short hair dogs they shed which is a little weird but I have a Soft Coded Weaton Terrier best dog i have ever gotten there a little hiper but if you train your dog well as a puppy they will be calmer. My dog is very calm and loves to play with kids. She is also an alergey free and a non shed dog.

There are a lot of breeds/mixed breeds dogs available that meet your criteria. Some may be more difficult to train than others, etc. Beagle was the first to pop into my head (for what that's worth).

www.puppyfind.com is a good place to research breeds. You can choose searches by upkeep, size and basic use like family dog. You can click on the dog's picture once it gives you choices and find out more about that individual breed. Good luck to you.

Try getting a Schnauzer. Their is naturally long, but it is easily trimmed.
