Installing a guest OS on VMWare isn't too difficult, but trying to spell it out with just text instructions can be challenging.

Typically, you would choose "File - New - Virtual Machine"
You can choose most defaults, but there are some choices to change, like which OS you will be running (Vista). The other choices can be left at defaults - like the location of your virtual machine, whether or not to preallocate your disk, and bridged networking.

The next major step would be to tell your new virtual machine to boot up using the .ISO image of your Vista CD or DVD. To do that you would need to select "Edit Virtual Machine Settings" and select the CD-Rom drive, then tell it the path to the ISO image that you will be using. Or, you can tell it to auto-detect the CD drive on your host system.

Once you have the default virtual machine settings configured and the virtual system ready to boot to your ISO, then you select "Start this virtual machine" and proceed to installing Vista as if you were on a new machine.

With all of that said, it's MUCH easier to see how it's done. Here are some images from TechRepublic columnist Steven Warren made for his experience installing, configuring, and running the Windows Vista Beta 5308 on VMware Workstation. Keep in mind that he makes some of his own choices, like a 16GB disk, NAT networking, etc.

The "next image" links in the article weren't working for me, so here are the individual links to each screenshot.
