If I understand correctly once a person is in hell their is no way out and he will suffer their for all time.
But what is the point?
It dose not matter if he repents, It dose not matter what his "crime" was.
I can understand if you say he dose not merit heaven, but what is the reasoning behind eternal suffering?
Who gains from it?

but dose the punishment justify the crime? What can a person do in a finite lifetime that equals an eternity of punishment?

Hell is an idea used to threaten non-believers with physical violence. Fortunately it is an empty warning today.
During the Inquisition the church tortured non-believers and accused witches in a way that simulated their disgusting fantasies of hell.
They were quite scary. Luckily we live in a democracy with freedom of belief or non-belief.

First of all, a person go to eternal damnation because he is sinning against God. God is God of judge and holly. He is also loving. But people always forget the judge and holliness part.
If someone murder 6 million people like adolf hitler, does he deserve to go to heaven ? Unless he repent before he died and accept Jesus, he will go to hell.
To enter the kingdom of God you need God's righteousness (not self righteous, God's righteousness). And only God is good, and the only good standard is from God. (exodus 20)
God gave human His moral law through Moses. It's the 10 commandments. 9 out 10 people that I talked too in the past, think that they are a good person. Until I asked this question, "Have you ever tell a lie?what it that makes you a liar", have they ever lust on someone, because that's adultery, and so on..
Basically if you break one, you break them all. But God's know our heart and our sinfull nature.
God doesn't want people to go to hell, that's why He send His Son . (John 3:16). When Jesus died on that cross, He said "it is finished".. it means what it means.. It's finished, you don't have to do anything else, but it requires obidience and faith to God's word.
Just think of this example, when you were a kid, you made mistakes. You lied to your parents to go to movie and you told them you go to library. Because you didn't obey them, when they found out about it, you got a consequences.. a punishment. You got grounded. If they don't do it, than they are not a good parents. Same thing with God. He is a good Father and He is a good judge.

You have a choice; you can live for yourself and your own sinful ways and reap the benefits of sin = death. (eternal damnation). or you can repent or turn from your sin and put your faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus the son of God born of a virgin, lived a sinless life on earth preached the word of God, healed the sick, freed those who were possessed, made the blind see, etc. then was rejected and beaten and crucified on a cross. Death could not hold him and he was resurrected and ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He who was sinless bore our sins for us, as a sacrifice to God so that we could be set free from our sins by putting our faith in Him. Not just believing, but living for him.

The "gain" is before the death, when you are able to scare people into converting, convincing them that there will be no other chances after they die. If you give people the opportunity, they will decide to wait it out, figuring that once they are in Hell, then they will be able to work their way back into favor. If people weren't so scared of the unknown, there would be a lot fewer religious people out there.

When a person becomes an enemy of God they condemn themselves to suffering in Hell.
Eternal suffering satisfies eternal justice.
And because our souls are immortal, judgment on the other side is forever. We prepare on Earth for the way we will spend eternity.
Think of how frustrating it is on Earth to us when someone literally gets away with murder. I don't know about you but it drives me crazy to think someone committed a serious crime and then walks away.
However, if the criminal is caught and punished, the "gain" is that justice is satisfied. No one should be rubbing their hands with glee that he is being punished. But it makes sense to us that he "got what he deserved."
Apply that concept to the spiritual reality.
Hope this is helpful to you.

Because a person that goes to hell has rejected the father that created him and refused his offer of salvation his whole life, that person God gave a million chances to go to heaven and the person just rejected it and told God to leave him alone, so God will leave them alone in hell away from the righteous!
