Gratis- usually means its "free" - as in free delivery
Libre means "free" as in freedom or liberty, like "This is a free country."
To say "Free her now" you would say "Dale la Libertad ahora!"

GRATIS - it is related to the cost, value or worth of something. For example, if you get a "free sample" of a product you are getting one "muestra gratis."
LIBRE- it is related to freedom and liberty. "you are free to do whatever you want" would be translated as "eres libre de hacer lo que quieras."
LIBRE - it can be used when you're saying that something is tax-free, or "libre de impuestos."

As above poster said, libre is to liberate
" Libren la ahora" --> Free her now.
It can also mean to be available.
"I'm free this weekend" -->Estoy libre este fin de semana
Gratis is something you don't have to pay for.
No pague para esta camisa; me la dieron gratis. --> I didn't pay for this shirt; they gave it to me for free.
