I had a root canal and a pocelain crown placed in approxiamtely 3 years ago. Recently, it bacame loose (i knew because i was chewing on that side and it popped off. I have a dominant side when I chew and the crown popped off was not in that side. My question is how long can crowns last in your mouth? My dentist told me that approx 10 years (I also have another one thath has been in for about that time without becoming loose from the same doctor). Should I tell my dentist and will she do it for a reduced price since it seems like it was her fault (since it loosened prematurely)? I dont see a reason for the loosening considering I barely use that side to chew. Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I'm not in pain or discomfort, just crown pops off at the most inopportune times.

First off, if the crown is 3 yrs old... your Dentist most likely will charge you full price to replace it (new crown).
BUT... who's to say, you'll even need a new one. We can RECEMENT crowns, as long as no damage has been done to the tooth itself when it came off. If the tooth broke off inside the crown, then most likely they'll have to re-prep the tooth, and place a post or pin (whichever your Dentist sees fit) inside the tooth with a build up, and then make a new crown.
A crown can last for years, then again it can last 6 months. Nobody knows, to tell you the truth. BUT, if the crown is older than a 'year'... i dont see your Dentist replacing it for free. Most will only replace it free, before the 'year' is up.

interesting question...usually if crown falls out it is due to underlying decay that has infiltrated the natural hard tissues. 3 years...long enough time for decay to develop. Are you flossing? Porc. Crowns have a margin where bacteria can build up and cause "margination" deterioration of the metals and roughness and crevices. Yes, dental work is supposed to last about 10 years, but it varies with each patient due to personal hygiene factors. I always say give extra love to your crowns and they'll love you back.

GO BACK AND TALK TO THE DENTIST WHO ORIGINALLY DELIVERED THE CROWN AND BELIEVE ME SHW WILL FEEL BAD ABOUT THE CROWN COMING OFF SO SOON. SHE MAY INDEED TO IT AT A REDUCED RATE OR EVEN FREE. BE NICE TO THE DENTIST ABOUT THE WHOLE THING.
