Iceland has no armed forces at all.
Just wanted to clarify some of your points about Japan's military. Japan actually does have a military and is currently seeking a non-permanent spot on the UN Security Council. Japan's standing military is about 160,000 personnel. With spending of over $51 billion, Japan has the forth largest military spending budget behind only the US, UK and France. Japan sent troops to Iraq.
People are suggesting it is some type of light-army or police force. They actually have 1000 battle tanks plus all kinds of the usual self-propelled artillery, 548 fixed wing aircraft (Mitsubishi F-2, F-15 McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II) and 530 helicoptors (including Chinook and Apache plus self-developed) plus missiles etc
The Japanese Navy maintains an additional 300 aircraft, 120 warships, and a fleet of 20 submarines. It ranks as one of the most modern capable navies in the world.
Just had to put that in!

Yes. Lots of countries don't have armies. Some of them have an agreement to have surrounding countries help defend them if they need military support. In Switzerland, everybody is in the army, but they don't really have an army per say. Every citizen is armed with assault rifles and Swiss Army Knives but they've never had to fight.

Costa Rica and The Vatican (Swiss Army Guards are not the Vatican's Army, they are Security Guards); and, if I am not mistaken, the Swiss do not have an army but each and every male citizen from 18-60 (or thereabouts) are said to belong to the State Militia.

Japan. All that WWII naughtiness... One of the rules that came as a result of the fallout was that they couldn't have a military. They don't have a 'military' per say, but they do have a 'defense force.' They also have spy satellites and an Intel network.
