I'm Catholic...I have no idea what you are talking about. Why would it be idol worship?

If this is all you see, then you do not understand your own faith. Unfortunately, you are not alone. One of the saddest things is someone born into Catholicism and not a clue what a precious blessing it truly is.

I converted to Catholicism...I only wish I'd been there all my life. I can't wait to receive Eucharist each week. The sacrament of confession is awesome. I just got home from a Penance service and it hit me...I'm so glad I'm not Protestant anymore.

I never worhip an idol of any kind. You misunderstand. You should go talk to a priest or even join the RCIA in your parish. Also, if you have doubts or questions about your faith go to www.catholic.com. Enter the forums and you can post all sorts of questions and get some really good answers.

Please take the time to know your faith. Actually as a Catholic you are required to know your faith and know the teachings of the church.

When have you as a catholic thought you were worshipping an idol? This makes no sense and I guess you are a fundie troll. No catholic believes they are worshiping a statue. The icons are symbolic reminders of saints and Jesus or whoever they depict. Like you keep a picture of a loved one as a reminder of them on your desk at work, do you love the picture or what the picture represents capice. Now if you are on the edge of becoming an athiest do it for the right reasons. Sometimes a spiritual journey is a search for truth and leads you to there is no god of the bible. I achieved that realization some time ago and am at peace more than when I was a Christian. Search for the truth whereever it takes you. If someting can't be proven and if faith becomes a substitute for reason you can determine that religion is a falsehood then.
Peace

That sounds like you're on the edge of becoming a deist, not an atheist.

I am an agnostic, and I find the Loyolan Exercises incredibly neat; they're meditative and almost Buddhist. That's some good reading right there. I also did research on St. Nicholas Owen, a Jesuit lay-brother martyred during the Gunpowder Plot, for a screenplay I wrote. There is as much good in Catholicism as in any belief anyone has, and it's in books like the Exercises and in people like St. Nicholas Owen.

(Plus, Father John Gerard - friends with Owen - has an autobiography and a narrative of the Gunpowder Plot. Despite the fact that both were written in the early 1600s, both are fantastically fun, interesting, and thought-provoking, and in translation read like well-written spy novels with a layer of faith overtop. Strongly recommended.)

You believe in God. You didn't seem to indicate that this faith is wavering in any way. Therefore, you're not on the edge of becoming an atheist.

Find a religion you like better or stick to your own personal faith. When you start to lose your faith in God, then you can talk to us about getting your membership card.

If your religion doesn't make sense to you there are a lot of things you can do. Try talking to other people in you church to see if you can figure out how you feel about the way you worship God. Talk to some open minded friends of other religions, maybe they can help you.

I went through a similar situation about 5 years ago. My religion didnt make sense to me anymore, so I took some time to figure out what did make sense. I studied a few other religions and talked to alot of people. I found a lot of good points from a lot of religions. I kind of came up with my own way of thinking about, talking to and worshiping God. It doesnt fit exactly into a specific religion but I think thats ok.

The most important thing (I think) is that you understand what you believe and why you believe it. Please dont be one of those people who just blindly follow and believe whatever the priest says.

You are not athiest if you beleive in God.
If the Catholic religion is causing doubts, go somewhere else. Try the Baptist churchs. They are a little more upbeat. Non-Denominational could work too.
Church can be fun! I have been to some fun ones where I have learn a lot and strengthed my faith.
I married into the Catholic church, it's very old school. But I still go to hear the word of God. :)

There has been alot of bad interpretations of God's word done by the Papacy that has greatly affected the christians in the catholic faith.

I would suggest a closer walk with God's word using the KJ version and find a church that more closely abides in the scriptures -AS IT IS WRITTEN.

Please don't get me wrong their are many woonderful Christ loving people in the catholic faith.

If you believe in God, you are not an Atheist. Maybe Catholicism doesn't work for you. There are many ways to worship God, and many do not even require any kind of organized religion. Take your time and explore what is meaningful to you. It is not always an easy journey, but you will find what you need. Good luck to you!

Trutthfully there is nothing I can tell you that will convince you 100%, only that this is one decision that you alone have to decide upon. If you believe that your faith up until now has been for the better, or something that has done more harm in your life.
I don't think anyone here could convince you fully what to decide, short of their own beliefs, so I wish you all the best in what you choose.

been there done that! lol.
i was a former catholic who, as a child, went to church with some neighbors to their christian church. i began to learn simply from the bible. i began to see the catholic church in a new way............not a good way!!! there are things that just do not coincide with the bible............all those saints.........we shouldn't be praying to them. and mary was wonderful, but, not to the extent that they worship her on par with god. no way, that's not right!!! also, some priest forgiving me my sins? jesus already took care of that.........and i don't need a priest telling me how many 'hail marys' i need to be saying to be forgiven. i only need to be truly repentative and ask god for forgiveness. and something else..........pergatory (sp.) where is that? why isn't that in the bible??? why were we told that it existed and that when we died we went there, and if enough people prayed us out we'd go to heaven. what's up with that??????
the icing on the cake, a priest telling me that i was the women he could leave the priesthood for........OOOOOO yuck!!!! that was just THE END of catholicism for me.

so, the simple christian life for me. straight talk, straight from the bible. that's the way to do it!!!!

hope this helps.

blessings!
