For future reference:
Use tweezers at the mouth parts. Pull gently until it releases its hold. The entire head should be removed. Never pull with bare fingers. A ruptured tick can release infectious material onto a cut in the skin and transfer its disease. After removal, wash the area and your hands thoroughly and treat the area with 70% alcohol.
This is the reason one must remove the whole tick.

All of the advice here is incorrect. If the head broke off try to get it out with tweezers, like you would a splinter. Then clean the area with soap and water and disinfectant. If the head is still not out just keep it clean and watch for redness that gets worse. That could be a sign of a secondary infection. go see a doctor then, for anitbiotics.

Definitely not, although an infection may result. Because ticks breathe through their shells, if you smother them completely with something, like engine grease, or vaseline, they will soon back out by themselves, and can be removed easily. Don't use anything the cat is likely to lick off, like butter.

You run the risk of infection from foreign bodies under the skin.

I use the heat method. Light a match and move it toward the head. The tick backs away...flick it off.
