Whether there is life after death doesn't really matter so much to me anyways, I am focused on the here and now and enjoying life.
I practice my religion because I like the feeling of kinship and because it makes me feel more connected to my heritage.

Peace and comfort while I'm still alive.
The Tao Te Ching and the writings of Starhawk have a lot of peace and comfort for me.
When I'm leaning more towards atheism/agnosticism, the works of Robert Ingersoll and Thomas Paine, and our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, give me inspiration and hope for a better future.

Well the Buddhist concept of rebirth isn't quite "life after death" in the most common definitions, so you have a lot to gain if you work on your karma and accrue only good karma.

Pretty well what anyone without a religion gains. It's a lifestyle without complaint. I am free to think and question. I can doubt the existence of my God and still be a follower.
Why, am I missing anything?

IF that were true, I would know that I tried to live my life as much as possible like a very great and humble loving serving man.
For me, that scenario is not true, so I do try to live my life exactly as described above, only for man who is 100% human and 100% divine, who is God, Jesus my Savior and King!

The teachings of Jesus, to carry the pack 10 miles instead of 5 miles. To give your cloak as well as your coat.
Do you have a problem with work ethic.
With doing.
With giving....

If God was not real, I would not be able to have this relationship with God I have now. Believe me, if God did not knock my heart's door and started to communicate with me through His Word...I would not have given Him any time of my life. I walked away from my childhood faith thinking that there is no God. : )
It makes all the difference when you have Holy Spirit guiding you.

If there is no life after death, what one might gain or lose from any experience in life may just be irrelevant.

You wouldn't gain anything but false hopes and expectations.
There's no afterlife for your body, but your soul lives on forever.
