I saw this show today where this lady was challenging different people in society, trying to get to the bottom of why the mainstream of people view having, say hairy armpits as being completely unfeminine, unattractive and unhygienic in some opinions.

So girls whats your view on this. Do you think it is acceptable in 2007 to let it all grow or do you think the smooth look is the way it should always be and why?

If you think of it as gross, why do you think its gross and likewise for those who may think it looks okay.

I am always confused when people say its unhygienic because men usually let their armpit hair grow and no one deems that as unhygienic so i was wandering, why do women think it is unhygienic for themselves?

Is it because the modern woman is worried about it being unattractive or do you think its just something mandatory for women to shave.

By 'let it all grow' i don't mean like let moustaches or beards grow (haha), i mean more like underarm hair and maybe some leg?

I find it sad that women are so critical of the few brave women who prefer not to conform to the "hairless ideal". When I was a student a fair time back unshaved legs + armpits were pretty common unlike today when the majority shave, wax, etc.

Personally there is something incredibly sexy about a woman who doesn't shave, especially if she is pretty with a reasonable figure. From a purely physical angle I'd rather go out with an average looking woman who didn't shave than some hairless model type.

I might be in the minority with this, but there are quite a few guys who like a woman who is natural + hairy- not in a freakish way, just normal body hair that most women have if they didn't shave- a bearded woman would be a turn-off!

Ladies started shaving before world war one. That is when the nylon stocking came out. It then became the trend, style, fade. In some countries women do not shave and it acceptable. It all depends on you. How do you feel unshaven? How do your peers view you? Now we have invisible deodorants that don't leave clumps in the arm pit hairs. But shave or no shave remember this...God does have a sense of humor. When you get old , you lose your pubic, leg and arm pit hair or it gets thin...very thin. In men they lose it on their heads but starts to grow in the nostrils and ears. So just try it. Every seven years you shed your skin, hair, thoughts and ideas. You become a different person. So enjoy your youth (in the right way) because you are not done yet. Make sure you'll have no regrets in life. You are still in the making.

I think women shaving is some combination of concern that not doing so will be unattractive/unpopular mixed with liking the look/feel.

However, I think many people - men/women/others - worry way too much about what others think in so many areas, including body hair.

I am a man who has no problem with what any woman chooses to do in the shaving department. My main concern is why is she choosing whatever action she is taking. I would hope it is because it is what she and she alone wants to do. Not because of societal pressures, not because it is what she grew up doing, etc.

Personally it is a turn-on for women to be natural. I also believe it is a double standard to demand women to look pre-pubescent, yet men can let it go wild - especially as a great amount of society itself, including women, want equality and to be treated the same/held to the same standards.

To reiterate, I hope people do what they want - because life is too short to worry about what others think. If they can't accept you for who you are and what you like (assuming it is not causing physical harm to the other person), then who needs them anyway?

HAIR REMOVAL: A PERSONAL CHOICE
Choosing to remove the hair on ones body is a personal choice that is often influenced by the culture in which a person is raised. Certain cultures and religions frown upon hair removal while others enthusiastically encourage the practice. For girls, this is often a more involved decision as the American media is constantly assaulting female consumers with advertisements for products that will remove "unwanted" hair on the face, legs, underarms, and bikini area. At the height of the feminist movement in the 1970s, many women gave up shaving and waxing their leg and underarm hair. Today, many women also are opting not to remove any body hair, while others choose to do so.

Personally I think it's an individual choice.

I noticed one person's answer mentioned having smooth skin for their man as being desireable, but I am tempted to mention that it's only smooth for a day. Then you get stubble. That's not such a nice feeling for a guy to enjoy.

I don't shave in general. I see no reason. And, for the record, I don't smell bad. It's called soap, water, and deodorant, folks. They work for everybody, hair or not, as evidenced by all the unshaven pits on men.

The only time I shave is if I am going somewhere formal and need to wear a sleeveless dress. Then I shave simply because it looks better in a formal setting. But in general, what's the point? My husband likes me just fine the way I am, and so do I.

I'm not going to bow to society's fashion demands in this or anything else. For instance, you won't catch me wearing pants that show the crack of my rear, thongs that floss my butt, enough makeup to make Tammy Faye Bakker say OMGWTFBBQ!!!1!! or my pants belted around my knees so my underwear are on display for the world.

Yeah, as far as I think, it's ok either way... to shave or not to shave.. that is the question! Whether tis noble of women to bare smooth shaven skin, or to have a more european flair! It's just hair for goodness sakes! I know of so many older women that just cannot shave anymore! I don't think it matters much anyway cause who at the older stages of life will walk around with bare arms and legs... who cares... it's covered!
I know that it can get crazy... but as long as the lady is clean and fresh, it isn't going to smell or be un-hygenic... I also don't think too many older men care about rubbing their lady's legs or armpits that much! The thrill is just gone downhill at this point... Ok... all you fresh-minded kids... that is not what I meant! :0) I mean it's just not that important ok! Hahahhahah!
Well... I for one, don't really give a darn about shaving... except my chin... I did get a few wild patches that do look like a man's growth spurt on my chin... I used to pluck them, but it's a full time job that way... now it's just easier to shave it off!

It's a cultural thing. If people are clean I try not to judge others. But, at other times I wonder why men like all that hair in their pits, and have wondered why they don't shave it just so it doesn't all stick together when they put on deodorant.

Hi there Dogeatdogzzz66, I don't like the way that body hair looks, because it looks so untidy; and, in a way, it looks wild and animal-like. Also, it is perceived to be masculine to have alot of body hair. It is not necessarily un-hygenic, but it is easier to keep the body cleaner and fresher smelling when the the hairs are removed.
It is not against the law in 2007 for women to let their body hair grow, but, overall, I think it is an ideal that has been 'socially constructed.'

Wow! You seem like a very intelligent person! Woah! I have a lot of opinions on society, so I will voice only a few. I believe that people are way too self concious. And do you know who made them very self concious? An insecure person, who made that insecure person insecure. ok. ok. You get it. The world is starting to be like a wheel of hate. Spinning back to many people. It IS hygenic to not shave. As long as you keep your body clean, and wear deoderant, and dress appropriatly, I have nothing against you! I truly believe that it is okay for people to just let go. Who needs the pressures of being beautiful?! Who cares about what others think? The only person who really needs to care about you, is yourself. But, you should'nt care about your features, but your heart. I personally like to have smooth legs, and arms because it makes me feel good, and pretty in my own way (but I don't care if other people think it is) I feel more comfortable in a skirt with smooth legs, and I do sweat a lot so it's hard not to shave, and smell good for me, but i think that all people should be able to do their own thing without someone trashing them about their hair. Why would they even care? I have my own opinions, and I don't care what some immature little smurth says abouth how it's so gross, it's the person's own choice, and they can live how they want. Live and let live! I do think that people do try to fit into the world, WAY too much! I persanally love fashion, and my friends think I'm very fashionable, but it's a hobby of mine, not a trend. A person should pick what they want to wear, they should'nt want society to pick it for them! Be your own person!
