The utmost thing that should be emphasized is the medical skills. You are going to see a doctor for the purpose of getting better health and well being. So someone would expect the best the doctor could give which is possible only if such doctor has good skills and expertise level. You won't be happy to feel of being a victim of a "trial and error". Charm, good office and organization would be given some consideration but should never be allowed to put yourself in compromise.

Just the degree, and the skills. No charm, no staff, nothing counts. Just because an office has money does not mean that it is quality.

1) How much time does he spend with you? Some doctors only come in for a few moments.
2) How many patients does s/he see in a day? If it's a HUGE number, think again.
3) Does the doctor run tests before dianogising a problem? How are referrels handled?

I'd say judge him by his knowledge of medicine and also his honesty in admitting when the subject is not something he knows a lot about. My doctor has admitted in the past when he needs to learn more about a problem I am having...he doesn't just BS an answer.
The other important qualities I'd say a doctor should have is good listening ability and empathy. If he really cares, it shows!

Definitly knowledge and skill would be number one on my list. I don't care how friendly, charming or well organized a doctor is, he/she is not working on me unless he/she knows what they are doing and can do it well. The other traits can be important to me if the knowledge and skill levels are the same among my choices. Would you take your car to a mechanic just because he had a nice smile?

I love my doctor. It can be a hassle going in for a walk in but where isn't it? She is great because she is very knowledgeable but more so because she is charming and genuinely cares about her patients. I feel as comfortable talking to her as I would one of my girl friends. So basically it comes down to knowledge and charm for me.

Competence above all!! Bedside manner is nice, but I have nearly been killed twice by kindly incompetents. The doctor who cleaned up the mess the last one made of my health had the bedside manner of a roadkill badger, but was head of his department in a teaching hospital and, after a year of suffering, had me on my feet in 6 weeks.
