I am probably more aware than most. They not only sang in the face of death, but during it some would say. They used to tie Christians to posts dip them in tar and light them as torches for the game.(gruesome I know) It was claimed that you could still hear them singing while they were burning and after they had to have been dead. Unfortunately that is tamer than some of the other things they would do to Christians. You should get "Foxes books of martyrs" if you don't already have it. Go to www.cbd.com and type martyr under keyword search there are lots of books to choose from.
There are also a lot of Christians still being killed today for their belief all over the world.

When I was a teen, my mom and Dad took my sister and me to Europe. I remember being in a museum and looking at all these fantastic paintings. I will never forget one that I remember most of all. It was a huge oil painting; it was a young woman in the colosieum at Rome. She was in the foreground of the painting, and she had one hand on a rock wall, and her face was looking upwards. You could not see who she was looking at, but at the top of the picture were some banners and drapery. In the background, you could see lions mauling what were probably Christians. I will never forget the look on her face as she was looking at the people above who were watching the spectacle.
I wish I knew the name of the painting, the artist or where I saw it.

You know, they don't have any historical evidence that it was done in the Colosseum itself. It was the smaller towns outside of Rome. Did you know... they have a few instances where the people were throwing themselves into the fighting below, yelling that they were giving their life for their religion... and they weren't being persecuted. Granted, some of them were definitely being persecuted and killed for their religion. But so were followers of Dionysus and other religions whose followers didn't bow down to the Emporer or bow down to his chosen God. Considering the Emporers all held the title "Son of God".
I can agree that it is inspiring to see someone face their death singing a praise. But it's only inspiring when the person being killed is innocent, being persecuted over belief alone. I can see that in many religions.

Yes I was fully aware of that fact, but at a later stage in the Roman history many Romans embraced our faith including the emperor, sorry but I can remember his name at this time.

They also attacked Roman soldiers with clubs that the called "Israelites" and yelled "God is Great" in Latin to provoke the soldiers so they could get to Heaven quicker.
One Roman leader remarked, "If they're in such a damn hurry to leave this existence, there are plenty of cliffs around here to jump off of."
They were the nutty suicide bombers of their day.
Gunpowder just hadn't been invented yet.

Yup, inspiring.
Christians, how many of you are aware of how many Jews gave their lives in gas chambers?
Are you aware of how many Christians of different denominations have killed each other for slight differences in belief?
Belief is beautiful when it's not hateful and most religions have had their inspirational moments and their not-so-inspirational moments.

the Romans had a problem with the Celtic religion too. they totally exterminated their priesthood the druids, wrecked their temples, cut down their sacred groves and put them to death in the arena and circus.

I am aware.
Pretty taunting, I imagine it would be hard being a Christian, knowing that one day you could be thrown in front of thosands of people to be slaughtered by a wild animal.
