We've only seen two truly atheist societies - Hitler's Germany and Stalinist Russia - and both are best remembered for savage inhumanity and mass murder. Does humanity need God? Kind of looks that way. These folks are real beasties.

These are pretty idiotic responses. Irregardless of what he said publicly,Hitler did not worship any god, least of all a Jewish god. Any standard biography of Hitler would inform you of that. Similarly,Stalin viciously persecuted all religions. The SS did not tolerate Christian members. These were not godless societies, but they were fiercely anti-Christian governments and indeed quite bloodthirsty. In 1937 the Pope vehemently condemned Fascism in an encylclical called In Burning Sorrow. In 1938 he published another one, attacking Bolshevism. He did not bless Hitler. He blessed the German troops fighting against communism on the east, and American soldiers fighting fascism in the west. That was a Christmas blessing to the troops in 1944. No blessing for Hitler. There are several volumes of conversations with Hitler, numerous memoirs by members of his inner circle and there can be no doubt that his periodic references to "divine providence" were mere fodder for the German masses. Privately,he made no secret of his opinion. of Christianity. He regarded it as a Jewish plot to destroy Aryan culture.
As far as her observation goes,China is presumably godless and non-aggressive,but that is only with respect to the outside world. From the Gang of Four to Tiananamin to Tibet,it has repeatedly showed uncommon cruelty, most recently abortion required (forced) by law. It is an unkind society. Castro has elected not to interfere with the Church. So that is not a godless culture. I'm afraid I'm inclined to agree - godless societies do seem to be extraordinarily amoral, even sadistic. They have no monopoly on this, but given the few examples we've seen of truly godless governments,I think a pattern is recognizable,of cruelty and evil. Certainly it is a point worth pondering.
It occurs to me that now that the Scandinavian nations are essentially post-Christian,they may be taken as a contradiction of the above, since they are decidedly not bellicose. But these societies are merely atheistic. They are not anti-Christian. The many examples of religious societies waging war can also be put in the balance but,in the first place, that would include almost all societies so there is no realistic standard of comparison, and secondly in the cases of Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany you are not just looking a war,but blunt mass-murder on a truly unprecedented scale. Stalin killed 11 million kulaks and starved 7 million Ukrainians to death. Hitler presumably was responsible for the murder of an estimated six million Jews. Given these two prominent and fairly recent examples of vehemently anti-Christian governments at work,I should be most hesitant to see a new example come upon us. It is,however, important to recognize that not all atheists are anti-Christian; many take a live and let live attitude,or supposedly. That, however,it not reflected by their postings here.

If you truly believe that I, an Atheist, have a loaded gun aimed at any religious person you have very big mental problems! And you should study history a little more before making your assertions. As pointed out Hitler was a Christian and some of the bloodiest conflicts in history have been fought in the name of some religion. Does the Spanish Inquisition ring a bell? How about the Crusades? Saddam Hussein, a devout Muslim, had killed many or his own people in the name of his god. Iran's Ayotollah Khomeini was another Muslim famous for slaughtering tens of thousands. Maybe you want to go back and read your history books again, eh?

Hitler did not behave christian. He was not likely an atheist as he had some sort of belief in a god.

Jesus said that many will come to him at the end and claim they were his, he will tell them to depart from him.

Making a verbal claim is no proof of a belief. Hitler may have claimed he was christain, but his actions prove otherwise.

How come none of you atheists are standing up saying "yeah, Stalin was an atheist?".

Perhaps murderous tyranny isn't limited by the claims of the perpetrator? How much hatred has been spread in the world by picking obscure cases like Hitler - or Stalin - and surmising that all followers of the beliefs they purport to follow are the same?

Atheists would not kill every religious person on earth any more than theists would kill every non-theist on earth.

Everyone always brings up Hitler as the worst kind of tyrant. Many rulers throughout history have been worse than Hitler. Many of them were religious men. To paraphrase Thomas Paine -- Worshipping a violent God makes violent men. Religion has been the basis for more violence than just about any other factor.

Have you read the Book of Judges from the Bible? It is almost nothing but a complilation of stories about the Israelites slaughtering their enemies in the name of God. Some of the worst violence ever recorded is recorded in the Bible. According to the Books of Samuel, Saul the first King of Israel and Judah displeased the Lord by not slaughtering enough people. King David came to prominence as a warrior and David was a religious man, he began the construction of the Temple that was completed by Solomon. It is the Book of Joshua that records God stopping the sun from setting so that Joshua could continue slaugthering his enemies.

During the Reconquest of Spain, the Spanish slaughtered countless thousands, perhaps millions in the name of God. When the Spanish conquered the Americas they again slaughtered people by the thousands, burned down cities, and looted billions of dollars worth of gold. And the Conquistadors were religious men.

During the First Crusade, the religious Crusaders slaughtered so many people during the conquest of Jerusalem that they waded to the Holy Places in blood to their ankles.

Cult leader Jim Jones was a religious man and he convinced his followers to drink poisoned Kool Aid. The terrorists who carried out 9/11 were religious men. The invansion of Iraq was ordered by George W. Bush and he is a religious man.

Religious people carry out as much violence as atheists and they often cloak it in religious symbols as if mass slaughter could be justified by saying words along the line of "It's God's will."

You are either misinformed or a liar.

Hitler was a believer in religion. He believed that killing the Jews is what his god wanted him to do. He was not atheist no matter how one looks at it there is far to much evidence to the contrary.

Stalin was an atheist but he was also Authoritarian. He never killed for the sake of atheism, but he did for his Authoritarian agenda.

No humanity doesn't need god. Authoritarian religions like all the fear based ones, namely Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, have killed a great number of people for their god.

What humanity needs is a REALITY CHECK and to learn to stop following Authoritarians both governmental and religious.

large Christian questioning there, bigot. i'm a Christian and think of your theory STINKS. How approximately analyzing James 2:10. there have been MANY, in reality maximum cultures in the process the historic past of the international, have not been Christian. Buddhists have not got self assurance in a God as Christians do, so does that make those certainly non violent persons into "beasties"? extra: Christians, please supply DARCY above a thumbs up, ok; prepare all of us do no longer think of in this way. Your questioning is f*ed up, and you're performing as an agent of devil in spreading lies and innuendo approximately people who will certainly be far greater trouble-free, and peace loving than your self. Am I judging, yep i'm; there are situations whilst the actuality needs to be recommended exceptionally whilst somebody in the call of Christianity is doing lots injury. (Hitler replaced into no longer an Atheist, yet replaced right into a mad guy).

Nazi Germany was not Atheist.

I have never met an atheist who wants to kill anyone

Also look to your own history - how many millions have been massacred in the name of Christ. Lets count now.

The conquest of South America
The conquest of North America
The massacre of the Jews in York
The massacre of the Hugalos
The Witches being burnt at the stake
The persecution of scientists and thinkers in the 14th 15th 16th C
The 100 years war
The English civil war
The massacre in Ireland
Henry VIII dissolution of the monasteries
Queen Mary persecution of the Protestants
Queen Elisabeth persecution of the Catholics

And that's just the tip of a massive ice burg

New idea: Maybe it was that government's coercive suppression of dissent that killed people!

Atheism: lack of belief in a deity or deities. No other doctrine goes with it, unlike religion which practically dictates from the cradle to grave. Moral views are necessary and many atheists have them. Some are secular humanists or skeptics and most adopt some kind of benevolent system.

I'm an atheist, and I don't kill people. In fact, the crime rates are lower in countries with a large proportion of atheists.
Something about knowing that we have one life to live makes it hard to justify mass slaughter:

P.S. Hitler was Christian, you ignorant boob. :-)

Hitler was Catholic mixed with some occult stuff silly. He wasn't even close to an atheist. He targeted the Jews BECAUSE of his religious upbringing, and people went along BECAUSE of there's. Where do you guys come up with this?

Stalin was a typical dictator. He didn't target the religious, just everyone his paranoid brain saw as a threat. He did not kill because he was an atheist.

There is nothing in atheism that would motivate indiscriminate killing. That is why we are so underrepresented in prison populations. Look that one up and try to wrap your shallow mind around it.

The crimes of Adolph Hitler actually pale in comparison to the many deaths, tortures, and crimes of all the Christian Crusades combined. Let's not forget the Inquisition, the never-proven Witch Burnings, and myriad other wars caused by Christianity.

Ask yourself this question instead: Does humanity need to kill in the name of God? And is that what you think God really wants?

God gave everyone free will. Could you really judge them for believing what they really want to believe?
