You have to grind it -- unground, it will pass through you without doing you any good.
To incorporate it into your diet, just sprinkle it on cereal, stir-fry, salad, etc. You can also use flax seed oil and add it to salads or smoothies (only a little -- it has a distinct flavor that may take getting used to).
quick smoothie: put some frozen raspberries in the blender. Add chocolate or mocha Silk (soymilk) or chocolate milk, a scoop of chocolate protein powder (optional), a little flaxseed oil -- blend & drink. If you put in too many frozen raspberries or not enough milk, you can blend and eat with a spoon!

I purchased a vacuum sealed bag of ground flax seed and I add it to smoothies and home made oatmeal cookies. It has no taste.

Either you have to mill it or make sure to buy it milled. Organic grown is best. Also so the milled seeds stay fresh longer, buy them in a vacuum sealed container. Then keep them in refrigerater after opening. All the above makes it cost more.
