It's not mono, it's actually mononucleosis if you want to be formal. Here is some more info:

Mononucleosis is it's 'medical' name ... and that is as 'scientific' as you can get. There could be a 'longer scientific name' but everyone should 'know and recognize' the name mononucleosis ... and it's called the 'kissing disease' because some people catch it by kissing someone else who has it ... but more people get it because their 'immune systems' are down due to stress and/or illness, and it is 'very bad' ... mono can't 'kill' but if you get mono you can get 'rheumatic fever' which damages the heart and kills some people. Rheumatic fever is NOT mono, but the two frequently 'go together.'

Infectious Mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis, (also known in North America as mono, the kissing disease, or Pfeiffer's disease, and more commonly known as glandular fever in other English-speaking countries), is a disease seen most commonly in adolescents and young adults, characterized by fever, sore throat, muscle soreness, and fatigue. White patches on the tonsils or in the back of the throat may also be seen, (resembling strep throat). Mononucleosis is usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which infects B cells (B-lymphocytes), producing a reactive lymphocytosis and atypical T cells (T-lymphocytes) known as Downey bodies.

The virus is typically transmitted from asymptomatic individuals through blood or saliva (hence "the kissing disease"), or by sharing a drink, or sharing eating utensils. The disease is far less contagious than is commonly thought. In rare cases a person may have a high resistance to infection.[citation needed] The disease is so-named because the count of mononuclear leukocytes (white blood cells with a one-lobed nucleus) rises significantly. There are two main types of mononuclear leukocytes: monocytes and lymphocytes. They normally account for about 35% of all white blood cells. With infectious mononucleosis, this can rise to 50-70%. Also, the total white blood count may increase to 10000-20000 per cubic millimeter.

Glandular fever (properly known as infectious mononucleosis) is a viral infection that causes an illness similar to influenza. It is sometimes called 'the kissing disease' because it was thought to be passed from one person to another through the mouth. The virus spreads through the bloodstream and the lymphatic system, causing the spleen, liver and lymph glands to swell as well as causing a fever (hence the term 'glandular fever').

mono

that is short for mononucleosis.

However you can get it even if you don't kiss someone.

The signs of mono are very similar to that of strep throat. Often than not the two get miss-diagnosed.

To know for sure you have to get a culture test. This is a swab of the back of your throat that goes in for testing. If you do have mono they will treat is with anti-biotic.
