You should not breed your shih tzu. There are way too many dogs that are euthanized every day in animal shelters so there is no reason for any more dogs to be added to the population. A responsible dog breeder does so only to breed the best qualities in their dog with others and to keep the standard of the breed correct. And no offense, but if you were a responsible and professional breeder not only would you not be asking this question but you would also be able to spell your breed name correct. If you really love dogs, do them a favor and do not make any more. Maybe one of those people who would have bought one from you will now adopt from the shih tzu rescue or the local animal shelter.

Some vets suggest that you let her go through one heat first so that she is more mature when she mates. Others I have talked to say it's o.k. on the first. You will just need to be vigilant in case she needs help. My Basset began to deliver and got so freaked out she left the first baby in the whelping box and dug her way under the back porch. We gently pulled her and two live pups out and prayed she wouldn't be defensive and bite us. She was wonderful and we ended up with ten healthy pups.

At least 2 years old. Please, please do your homework before breeding your shih tzu. So many things can go wrong during the birth process. I hope you will consider spaying your little dog. There are so many, many unwanted dogs in the pounds and on the streets. The pet overpopulation in this country is disgraceful. If you are determined to breed, please do a lot of research.

18months or 2nd heat. It's not a good idea to breed them on the first heat as they are usually to young to care for the pups. Good luck!!
