I suggest that you dont invite them because they might not take it in a good way... you should just celebrate alone

To be honest, why have dinner at all? Why don't you and your immediate family go out to dinner after the service, then casually mention we are going out to grab something to eat. If they want to go, they already know to pay for themselves. But you shouldn't put it on the invite. Maybe you should just do a BBQ, something you can afford. Because putting dinner, pay your way, on an invitation, is straight tack, girl.

there is no proper way to word that. to be brutally honest, its either gifts or the meal. nobody is going to give your daughter a gift and then pay for their own meal afterwards. a potluck dinner is more feasible, and much more proper, etiquette wise. that way youre not paying, but youre not being tacky enough to ask them to pay for their own meal.

Maybe I am just too old but an invitation is just that. That means you pay.

Sounds pretty tacky to me. If you're totally set on this restaurant, limit your guest list to those who you can afford to pay for. Otherwise, host a pot luck or have someone help you cater it. Spaghetti, chili, fried chicken, are all relatively cheap and can be made very tasty.

That is exceptionally tacky. If you can't afford to feed them then don't invite them.
