Personally I don't mind if a women wears some kind of clothing which covers her head/hair, as long you see her face in public. What she wears or not at home, it's up to her. This is of course a "Western" point of view.

I don't know what kind of clothes the Virgin Mary had in her times, but Mother Theresa did not cover her face. A nun normally does not cover her face. When a nun has a teacher profession she does not cover het face either.
Lot of (older) women in the Catholic or Orthodox faiths still wear a kind of headscarf, so that's true.

I don't know if Islam treats women as second class, but I have the perception that in some Muslim dominated countries the existing culture (not necesarily the religion) has the custom of beating women who they think have dishonored the familiy. This even occurs in Western countries where young girls have been beaten or threatened by their father and/or brother. You don't have to believe me, ask around.

I'm honestly glad for you that you can do whatever a man does; but I think it has to do with your personal situation, not with your religion. There are Christian women who don't enjoy that kind of freedom.

About the high rate of raping and adultry: in the West (not being perfect, but most important being an open society) such information by law is available to everybody and is no secret. Most Muslim countries are not open societies and whatever information is given normally cannot be checked. So, maybe it's true what you say, but how can it be confirmed?

A personal note: some time ago I saw the movie Kandahar (low budget, no professional actors, mostly local people in Afghanistan) and I was really amazed at the beauty of the women (their faces) when they removed their burka in the movie. Lot of green and light colored eyes. The burka's were in various colors (yellow, orange, light blue), not the black ones we tend to see. Is this a culture thing of Afganistan?

I think that it is first, a traditional garb that once had a utilitarian purpose. The viel helped cut down on desert glare and sand in the eyes. Then, it was ritualized to prevent lust or provoke it with the idea that the less seen the more imagined. Depending on the veils transparency.

Now, it is a tradition that also shows culture and religious leanings.

Personally, I don't give a rats fig encrusted molar about the veil but rather the concept that some one would FORCE the wearing of it rather than letting it be a Choice. IF you choose to wear it. then you have all my support. if you are forced to, i'll be against it.

Great question , sister

It's clear that a Muslim woman is a diamond reserved for the one who deserve and respect her

so the veil is a simple way to protect woman against the eyes of men ...... also I guess ( as man ,I'm not sure) that the girl/woman wearing Hijab is more self confident and comfortable in the public life .

for me,, I really respect and admire any woman or girl wearing veil more than the others
At least when i decide to get married ..... I'll never look at those with bare head

Islam commands people to be modest. This has been more enforced on women than men. Other reason Muslims give to justify this is that is protects women. I guess muslims men are so out of control, that if they see a womans hair they will go crazy and rape her then and there. Thats kind of a joke, but it is true that many see the hijab as a way to protect women.

Muslim women will tell you it frees them as men dont look at them in a sexual way. Again Muslim men must be total perverts

I honestly don't know. My guess is that it is written somewhere in the Quaran (sorry if I killed the spelling on that) and that it also became tradition based on the needs of the region. In the desert, coverings would essential. But is the hijab only for women? If so, maybe the reason has more to do with culture, as well as the Quaran. (Like I said, guessing here.)

In mid-summer it has to be said that the women do look attractive here in the UK. So possibly in Arabia the hot weather makes the ladies look very beautiful, so certainly there might be more temptation to lust there.

Possibly Mohammed had a real issue himself in this area - he had many wives so obviously enjoyed his sexuality. Possibly in Aisha's case it was a bit suspect.

Its obviously an attempt to prevent lust by denying opportunity. It might work to some degree. I guess it would make problems if people go to the extremes such as niqab and burka (and they are abusive I think). In that case men may get frustrated even though externally denied, and that frustration may express itself in strange ways. (A scottish friend of mine got a lot of attention from Arab men as a young teenager when he was in Saudi).

I think it's the same reason as for Christians.

A good many Christians, including myself, believe in head covering.

1 Corinthians 11 5-6

But a woman dishonors her head if she prays or prophesies without a covering on her head, for this is the same as shaving her head. Yes, if she refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut off all her hair! But since it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut or her head shaved, she should wear a covering.

Women get very vain about their hair. What better way to end that problem than to just cover it up?

It was a common practice for woman in the Middle East to cover their hair.

Either when they get married as a sign that the woman is no longer available or as a standard practice of modesty.

Islam never invented this practice. They simply took a already recognized custom and made it into a divine decree.

I'd like to add to Max Mari's comments regarding Christian women who should wear a head covering to church.
European women no longer do this because it is believed European men are advanced culturally to know how to behave in a sacred place. South American women on the whole still cover their heads when attending church.

I think the "official" line has something to do with modesty and "protecting" both women and men from the sin of lust. However, the reality is that such a dictate subjugates women by making them second class citizens under the complete control of their husbands/fathers/brothers or the nearest male.

In practice, this is dangerous for women and men and keeps a society in the dark ages.
