I agree with Jeffrey, VLC is the best freeware/open source player available out there.
If you are willing to pay, then the best player is Total Video Converter which can handle ALL of you audio video needs!
*If you have Windows then Windows Media Player should play your AVI file unless you don't have the necesary codec installed.

VirtualDub is a superior open-source (ie free) software to be utilized in enhancing *.avi archives by technique of reducing, splitting and growing a member of. i have not used it for years so it can have greater on account that. note it wouldn't have magnificent features like fading in, subtitles etc that different proprietary application does eg iMovie
