If you can overlook some of the slang (both Black and White), I don't think that American English is bastardized at all. In fact, sometimes the forms of a language used in a colony may even be more correct than their equivalents in the mother country. That's one of the ironies about languages. For example, compare American English mom, baby carriage, eggplant, lieutenant vs British English mum, pram, aubergine, leftenant (all later developments) or Italo-Albainian mariol "thief," and vrit "drinking glass" vs Albania Albanian hajdut and filxhan, from Turkish.

American English is a dialect made up of many, little dialects. These pronunciations stem from all the peoples who emigrated over the past 350+ years. Every ethnic group who arrived contributed parts of their language and their pronunciations to American English. Some dialects have died out, some have merged with others and some have yet to be heard.
