If jehovah's witnesses wear what Jesus and his disciples used to wear, what woud you think? You would laugh because I would! We are in the 21st century. style of clothing have changed big time since Jesus was on earth. Just because jehovah's witnesses dress nice and decent and in suits doesn't mean they are expensive. goodness.... why criticize how they dress? instead, we should commend them for dressing up nicely when going to their preaching work and when they go to their Kingdom Hall. I go to church in jeans... some i've seen have gone to the house of god in slipppers and shorts. If Jesus was here on earth and see these Jehovah's witnesses going inside the house of his Father in dresses and suits... and Jesus sees other religions go in the house of god in jeans and shirts, WHO WOULD YOU THINK JESUS WILL respect more? THINK ABOUT IT!!!

guess what? I buy my cloths in walmart also. even my shorts and tops when I am not at the kingdom hall or going door to door. there is nothing wrong with dressing nice without spending alot of money. people think that we woman who are Jehovah Witnesses never wear pants or in the summer shorts or tops. many do. I enjoy wearing comfortable cloths but where ever we are we are Jehovah Witnesses so we are neat and clean.

Would you like to hear the answer from the horse's mouth?
*Sigh*
Have you ever taken a close look at Witnesses? Because unlike many other religions, the majority of us are not very prosperous at all because we put spiritual things ahead of material things. Trust me, I should know! :0)
We do, however, make a concerted effort to dress nicely and keep our appearance neat and clean, even when we are not in the ministry work. As Witnesses, we want to keep God's name above reproach and give Him the respect and glory He deserves, so we just want to put our best foot forward.
Don't you appreciate people who take the time to look presentable? Our message wouldn't be very respected by others if we walked around looking like slobs! In ancient Israel, priests were required to wash and put on clean robes before entering the temple to render service to God. We aren't under the Mosaic Law, but since God deserves the best we can give, we follow that principle of physical and moral cleanliness.
And BTW, many of the first Century Christians were very wealthy before their conversion, including the Apostle Paul, the Ethiopian Eunuch and others. Would they have thrown away all of their nice clothing? I doubt it. They just didn't make material gain their focus any longer. Neither do we, although we do make a living and care for our families.

Better question:
(Why do many evangelists live in mansions and drive Rolls Royces?)
We have a lot of respect for God. We try to dress appropriately. All my clothes come from thrift stores, but they are nice and clean and modest. The most expensive dress I have cost me $5.00. I know many others that know how to shop for bargins also. We donate our time, money and effort to help people come to an accurate knowledge of what the Bible teaches, and many of us have to work full time jobs as well. Don't you think it is a little bit absurd to pick on the clothes that we wear? Look instead at the message we are carrying.

You do not have to pay much to dress nice.
I think dressing nicely when you go to church is a way to show respect to Heavenly father like when we go to a wedding we tend to dress up because it is a special occasion just like church is. Also when I dress up for church it is my way to show other people that it is the Sabbath day and I am keeping it holy by going to church.
I have seen one Jehovah witness before (used ot give me some magazine everyday at the bus stop) and I never looked at his clothes.

i am not a jehovah witness but i believe the reason you see the ones that go from door to door dress nicely is to impress you in a way.. if someone came to your house dressed in rags you may not talk to them as quickly as you would someone dressed nicely..and the ones that i have met are not really dress that expensively.. they are clean and look nice.. kinda like the boy or girl next door type

It is true that Christ did not care for fancy clothing/trappings. However, we can assume he tried to dress presentable. I personally tend to be a pinch penny. I cannot stand paying allot for clothes. I still dress presentably. Even when not in suit and tie I try to always be somewhat well groomed.

You comment about expensive cloth is laughable to the extreme. When we have religion conferences, other than JWs here in Kansas City, vendors of high priced clothes rent booths at the conferences to show their wares. When there was a Baptist conference, on vendor had a dozen suits worth $32,000 stolen from his booth.
Yes, JWs dress nice, but not at a high price. Males generally get their first suit at age 12.
Growing up, once my grandmother, who was not a JW, bought me a fairly expensive, double breasted suit, when I was about 14. I grew out of it inside three months. From me it went to Neil, who wore it to meetings for a few months and outgrew it. Than it went to Kevin who wore it for a few months and outgrew it. From there it went to a teenager in another congregation. Of interest, four year later, Neil and Kevin were four inches taller than me.
Witnesses have it down to an art to dress nice without the nice price tag. They know where to get the best clothes at thrift stores. The Salvation Army likely sells more clothes to Witnesses than to members of any other religion.

One does not have to dress expensive to dress nice. I, and a lot of women in my church, don't spend a lot of money on clothes. Wal-Mart, thrift stores, yard sales, I even make some of my clothes, using cloth that I buy on sale.
One should dress as nicely as possible when representing one's God, if said God is a God of good. It shows respect.

Jesus had an expensive garment, the under garment had no seams and that is what the Romans were casting lots over.
Jesus appreciated gifts from men and gave us some men as gifts to help us come to an accurate knowledge of him and his father Jehovah.
