I assume you mean Pope John Paul II.
It has to do with his humility. He wanted a humble burial. Very few people know the pope lives in a tiny room and sleeps in a twin bed. JPII was extremely humble. He didn't want to wear all the papal jewels. But the committees kept at him about it.
I love the photos of him skiing and camping. I imagine, if he'd had his way he would have been buried out in the woods, deep in the mountains some where...
Edit for all of you pop offs out there. There is a VAST difference between a 5 or 10 THOUSAND DOLLAR casket and a simple wood box - i.e., coffin - hand made by Trappists.
Edit for raging PR - your friend the embalmer has misinformed you. My friend actually works for a funeral parlor.

A casket is where the body goes in a coffin; a coffin includes the vault, which seals the outside elements from the casket.

I think a casket and a coffin are the same thing, but christianity doesn't require either.

Look at how Jesus was buried - wrapped in cloth. Maybe he thinks it will bring him closer to God.

Perhaps he was Jewish.
The Jewish tradition is to be put in a simple wooden box.
