As a hospital corpsman in the navy you could be assigned aboard ship or to a naval hospital located at any navy or Marine base. If you wish to serve with the Marines as a corpsman assigned to a Marine unit you would have to volunteer for that duty.

Navy Corpsman Jobs

Navy Corpsmen are sent as sole healthcare providers in direct combat operations where it's to dangerous to send Nurses or Doctors. You may get stuck somewhere safe but when the metal meets the meat and bullets are flying, a Corpsman will be there. When you get out as a Corpsman your skills and knowledge are not valued in the civilian sector so go to college. Corpsman skills and training alone will not get a decent job. So go to college become a nurse and get paid, you'll be happier. Being a Corpsman is honorable and that's it.

Yes an no. HM's deploy with the Marines if they are (FMF= Fleet Marine Force) qualified. Don't put FMF school in your contract when you go to MEPS. Regular non-FMF HM's can be deployed to Iraq but they will work in a field hospital within the Green Zone. They really need experience HM's in Iraq though so a booter right out of HM "A" school isn't that helpful. You are more likely to go to a hospital or branch clinic on a Navy or Marine Corps Base until you get some experience under your belt. But if you are FMF you can bet you are going with the Marines ASAP. The Marines do a great job of looking out for their HM because without them they have nobody to patch them up when they get hurt so you aren't out their fending for yourself. You will need to hold your own, but they know you are a Sailor and not a Marine and look out for you to that extent. HM is a great job that can teach you a million things. There are more specialties within the HM rating than any other rating in the Navy, including the old rating of Dental Tech which was absorbed into HM last year. It is all up to you negotiating a "C" school into your MEPS contract or you getting the number one or two ranking in your HM "A" school to earn a "C" school following "A" school. It is a great rating depending on what you do with it.

It's not aways a safe job, as a matter of fact, it is my opinion that, as far as navy jobs are concerned, navy corpsmen have about the highest casualty rate as anyone, especially in the Iraq conflict.

Those Navy corpsmen who are assigned to Marine Corps combat operations are just as vulnerable as a combat Marine.

If you wind up at Great Lakes, it's pretty safe, I suppose, but if your luck is like mine, you'll be assigned to a Marine platoon out in the middle of nowhere being shot at.

No job defending this great country of ours is easy. Corpman is an honorable job. It could be easy or it could be more stressful, either way- you will have the respect of every infantry Marine you encounter for the rest of your life.
