FireWire and USB are two similar but different technologies. FireWire, which is Apple Computer's name for IEEE1394 standard ports, is a high-speed serial data interface that works at speeds up to 800 megabits per second (Mbps). There are two common varieties of FireWire: 400 Mbps and 800 Mbps. iLink is what Sony calls its version of FireWire.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus, and it is also a high-speed data interface. There are also two common versions of USB: USB1 has a maximum speed of 12 Mbps and USB2 has a maximum speed of 480 Mbps.

Both USB and FireWire can transfer data at very fast speeds. However, the advertised top speed exists only in the minds of specification writers -- you will not get those speeds in the real world. Both USB2 and FireWire are plenty fast, though. My personal experience is that FireWire is a little faster than USB2.

FireWire and USB use different cables and connectors, and cables for one type can't be used on the other's devices.

Take a look a the link below for more information on USB.
