laminate flooring is not generally cold and there is a huge choice available now. i think the underlay is very important and would not recommend the thin polystyrene roll as it can make the floor sound tinny and if the floor is a little uneven it can make laying the floor harder than with the other styles of underlay.Instead spend a little more on either a fibre board or the foil backed underlay. You also have a choice of glue together or click together laminate, click together is alot less messy. if you are laying the floor yourself dont forget to stagger the joints by at least 300mm. hope you find this useful.

Laminate is easier to wash and (assuming to get reasonable laminate) harder wearing. However it does seem to get very dusty very quickly. I suspect that it doesn't get dusty faster than carpet, simply you see the dust more. Laminate flooring can be layed over underfloor heating that can provide a reasonably cheap source of heating.

I put it in 3 rooms 2 years ago and I've just ripped it all out and put carpet down. Laminate flooring is like a magnet to dust and I hated it. I'd rather vac capet every day and know its clean...........Really - stay with the carpet. You'll regret it!

There are laminates called "floating floors".

These are not glued to the sub floor, but are installed over a cushion. They aren't as cold as glue down.
Check with a dealer.

the only thing with laminate flooring that i don't like is that it chips very easy if you drop a cup on it and if you spill water on it ,it lifts up dead easy.

It is cold under feet if your heating isn't on. It cools down very quickly. But it is very hardwearing, and I make sure i wear slippers downstairs!
