The bloated feeling seems more troublesome than the pain in my sternum as the pain is not constant.

I had that for about two weeks, I looked as if I was pregnant, and I'm a bloke, lol. I took gaviscon for about three days and was fine. I think if you had an ulcer you would be in loads of pain as well mine was just discomfort.

I'd call your doctor, and get an appointment as soon as you can.
There are several things it can be. I've been having a similar problem recently, and had been trying all kinds of over the counter medicines, only to find that some of them had made it worse. It turns out so far, that I have IBS, and gastritis. I'm still waiting for my blood and urine test results (this just happened)
My main complaint was severe and painful bloated feeling in my abdomen, and feeling full, constipation, and at times, headaches, and nausea.
I'm not saying that is what you have, what I am saying is that it could be any number of things.

Your GP, Doctor, can examine you, discuss your symptoms like location of the pain, take any tests they feel necessary, and give you the better remedies for it. If it's very severe, go to the emergency.

I've actually made my condition far worse by taking medicine I got at the pharmacist.

It could be acid reflux, this is where the tummy produces too much acid and it enters the oesophagus giving a bloated/burning sensation. You could simply need some medication to take before eating or an OGD (camera down the throat to have a look, sounds worse than it is!).

Tummy ulcers feel like mouth ulcers only they are in your tummy, I know I had one! Go see your GP not worth worrying about it is it, get it checked then you'll feel much better

Perhaps you have a hiatus hernia that causes the sort of discomfort you are undergoing.
I take Lansoprazole without which I have problems with indigestion.

This needs to be evaluated by a dr to see what could be causing the symptoms you have going on. They can best help you figure out what could be causing this.

Sounds like indigestion. I've been feeling like that lately too. And it's just been indigestion and heartburn.
