I think you have your country wrong. I don't think cocoa grows in Africa but in South America and child labor is in every country all over the world. I think they should institute child labor here in the US for some kids. The ones that don't want to go to school and be juvenile delinquents. They should be made to work. Kids are doing everything else having babies, getting high, robbing, killing, stealing, raping, molesting other kids. Those little bastards can work. What moral is being broken by working I have worked since I was 11 years old. doing odd jobs, babysitting, delivering newspapers etc.... and I am a female. So those little bastards can work too. You don't work you don't eat. What liberal minded individual is teaching you this theory? They must be getting high. You would not eat period if you take on that mind set. WHo do you think is working the fields in the US, the illegal mexican immigrants and their children, since slavery ended an the blacks migrated north for real jobs and stopped sharecropping. WHy do you think your president wants a free worker card for them? open your mind not your mouth. My Geometry teacher always told me to load my brian before I shoot off my mouth. Take heed. Don't pick on the chocolate makers. Corporations are doing it everywhere they call it Globalization it's just another name for modern day slavery. They dodge the tax man and all the US labor laws.

I was much happier not hearing that.

Still, if it weren't for the employment of the cocoa plants, would these kids be able to have jobs at all? And, you didn't say one word about whether they're treated well or not.

Still, I like a bit of chocolate now and then. It's good for you.

Well, if you put it that way, I guess that a lot of the things we eat and purchase in general are "sinful." Child labor goes on in many countries throughout the world, and while the children are getting paid meager wages, we are sitting around on our fat asses enjoying the products that they have slaved to make. So, yeah, technically it is morally wrong, or at the very least unfair. But that doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up chocolate altogether. Maybe you can look up different types of chocolate that are made in the United States so that you don't have to worry much about child labor. I can understand your concern, though.

Good question.

Yes it is.

Make sure you buy "Fair trade chocolate".......
http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/
http://www.lwr.org/chocolate/index.asp
http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/products_chocolate.htm

The same thing goes for coffee, bananas, sugar, pineapple, and many other imported food products...

The fact that unfair trade and worker exploitation takes place all over the world, does not make it right, and it does not mean that we should not at least try to do something about it, if we have the choice....

And, no, the child workers do not get to eat any of it....

Here is the real question.

Do you want to provide some support for a third world family that is so poor that every member of the family needs to work to earn a living.

Boycotting the purchase of these goods is not going to raise the living standards of these people.

The real issue is to reduce poverty in these areas, so that the children don't have to work and can enjoy a decent education.

Now where is that chocolate.

I agree with you - that's why I avoid Swiss/Belgian/Austrian chocolates that come from cocoa produced in West Africa

But you can always enjoy your Mars and Snickers bars as they are not pure chocolate and US chocolates mainly come from Brazil and as far as I know, there's no child labour there

no eating chocolate is not morally wrong, i mean u can find the bad in everything... like paper, should u feel morally wrong for writing on a peice of paper, when the tree that was used for the paper had a family of animals in it?
but no i dont think that me eating chocolate is morally wrong, but it is wrong for the people in africa to have harsh child labor.
hope this helps :)

Not if it's fair trade, which Green and Blacks isn't by the by. Anyway, computer components, clothes, shoes, jewellery, cosmetics etc etc - these rely on questionable outsourcing too.

I think when it comes down to it, unless you're really, really careful, being a Westerner is morally wrong.

it's good that you are thinking globally, and i know what u mean. I guess you are right, though, since companies dont really tell that to people, they just what the *chi...ching* and the fame. As u said, it is morally wrong, but not all chocolate is made in Africa*
