Just a thought but, you could paint it to look like wood. My sister bought a wood graining tool and painted her metal door to look like wood. You can't even tell that it is really metal. Try it, you can buy the tool at home depo and it has a website on the package with a video showing you exactly what to do, plus they tell you what paint and colors to use. Look into it, I really like the door at her house, it looks great!

First you want to sand the door with 100-150 grit to scuff the old paint. Then you will need to clean it. If this is done with water you will need to allow plenty of drying time. I recommend Acetone if available, if not a good non-oil base paint thinner works well. As for the type of paint, If you have not gone through the old paint use any enamel paint you are comfortable with. I hope this helps, Good Luck

If it is alminium (never painted) you must prime it with a latex primer (alminium and galvinized are only two metals that should be primed with latex). However, if it is steel (more likely) then you should prime it with an oil based primer. They are excellent at sticking to shiny surfaces, especially metal, and leave a porus surface that paint (latex or oil) will adhear to.
For the post above about the wood graining tool. You would do these steps first and your base coat (applied after primer) will be the color recomended by the gel stain company.

Your door is probably not aluminum but it is more than certain to be galvalised steel, new galvanised steel needs to be weathered but as your's is obviously old, this would not apply, just get a metal undercoat and you can paint over it once the undercoat is dry, you should not encounter any problems

You will need a Zinc etching primer for aluminimum (and galvanised metal) or the top coat will flake. Hammerite do the primer.
