Not knowing what you were being treated for, its hard to have an answer. If it was depression, and you are coping well now, congratulations on taking your life back. Doctors do over medicate and there are thousands of people out there walking around like zombies because doctors give them stuff that is too harsh for their mind and body.
I had a nervous breakdown just over two years ago and ended up in hospital with psychosis for three weeks. I was discharged from hospital on anti-psychotics, anti-depressants, and sleeping pills. I spent the next 6 months not doing anything because I felt dead inside. Then I went off everything, totally against doctors advice. 6 months later, I had another breakdown and was psychotic again. I took the medication for a wee while and then again stopped taking it, I have been well for almost a year, I am hoping I will stay that way, but if not, I would rather be crazy for a bit and alive, than sane by a doctors point of view and wanting to curl up and die.
I guess I just wanted to point out that even if you are feeling well now, there is no saying that you won't relapse, and you need to keep assessing how you feel.

If you were taking meds for depression and feel fine, don't worry about it. The one thing you do want to have is someone you can talk to if things get rough again, a friend, family member, or even a therapist. Most people go on medication for depression because it has reached the point that counseling no longer helps. A prolonged state of depression actually causes chemical changes in the brain, which is why medication is necessary. If you deal with your feelings before it reaches that stage, medication may not be necessary. Take care of yourself and your emotional needs and you should be fine.

I worked for a psychological clinic and I can tell you that everyone goes through hard times. Everyone has pain. It takes a strong person to go off meds and face life head on (thats from personal experience) Life isnt always easy, nor should it be. It does depend on what you were diagnosed with though. If you were diagnosed as bipolar, generalized anxiety or any thing around those then they can come and go throughout life. If you were diagnosed as something more complex, I would discuss with the dr the possible complications of going off meds.

I am glad that you are feeling better. Remember that there will always be stresses in life, and these stresses help us deal with other stress in the future. Our mind is resilient and builds up tolerance. We all go through depressing periods in our lives. When things aren't going good for me I just remember that things could be much worse and that things have been better. That things always get better. Life is a roller coaster. It reminds me of the movie Parenthood with Steve Martin where he comes to the realization that life shouldn't be easy and always on a straight path, that these are the things that make life interesting and worth living.
If you feel depressed in the future a very good councilor is much better and a more permanent solution to meds. They help you learn how to diagnose and heal yourself, rather then tuck the emotions away under the blanket of medications.
Good luck!!!

I've never been on medication, but once in a while I get depressed when I'm deprived of something. The deprivation could be mental or physical.
I don't know you that well, but all I can say is hey, you made it though day one. That's more of what anybody going through your situation could ever accomplish.

Well, hopefully you were weaned off of them, and if so, and your feeling good about yourself, you go girl! I myself have been on meds for about 6 years now, instead of lowering the doses, my doc keeps upping the doses. I have a little plan of my own to stop myself from being dependent on the drugs. I wish you well, I know depression can really take a toll on ones life. Keep it up! ( :

I was on meds for years when I was a child. I stopped taking them when I was 18 because I felt like I had worked out my issues..I was happy...I have been happy ever since, and only have days here and there of depression..Never more than 1...It has been wonderful. I hope you have resolved all of your issues, and can continue growing happier and stronger by the day. :)

I had been over-medicated for years!! When I finally got off of MOST of the anti-depressants, I felt MUCH BETTER.
I do believe that doctors over-medicate!!

I TOO HAVE BEEN ON MEDICATIONS FOR MANY YEARS AND SOMETIMES I WONDER IF THERE WILL EVER BE TIME WHEN I WILL BE DEPENDENT AGAIN... I AM VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT SOUNDS TO ME THAT YOU ARE VERY SATISFIED WITH IT SO FAR!!!SOMETIMES I WONDER IF IWILLBE ABLE TO BE STRONG WITHOUT MY CRUTCH. WAS THIS YOUR CHOICE SWEETIE? DO YOU HAVE AN OPTION AND AN EMERGENCY NUMBER JUST IN CASE YOU NEED HELP AGAIN? IF NOT... I THINK YOU SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN BUT PUT IT SOMEWHERE THAT YOU WON'T SEE IT EVERY DAY!!!ALSO...KEEP YOUR CHIN UP GIRL BECAUSE I DEFINITELY KNOW HOW CRUEL AND UGLY EVERYDAY ACTIONS FROM ALOT OF PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD CANGET TO US IN A SPLIT SECOND, SO DO'NT LET THEM GET TO YOU AND REMEMBER TO WALK AWAY OR JUST SAY SOMETHING SWEET AND PLEASANT IN RETURN! AGAIN... I REALLY LOOK UP TO YOU, AND MAKE SURE YOU TRY SOMETHING NEW AND POSITIVE IN YOUR LIFE TO PREOCCUPY YOUR MIND AND "PAMPER" YOUR "BEAUTIFUL MIND" AND YOUR "BEAUTIFUL SELF"!!!!!
