RE :Is the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer a good car for a beginning teen driver?
Hey, I'm going to get my license soon and I was wondering if the recently released 2008 Lancer (any trim) is a good car for a teen driver.

I personally want a nice and slow car with plenty of metal and airbag around and safety features and all that, NOT a sporty car.
Not a subcompact either. Those are deathtraps. Not too many seats, as someone will always ask for a ride or something. On the other hand a two-seater may... well, be a bit too intimate. ;)
I'd say a "slightly used" car is probably best, less than 3 years old, so it's new enough to look almost brand new, new enough to have the latest safety features, but old enough to be cheaper than brand new cars, and still have warranty (and extended warranty can still be purchased).
A compact sedan would probably be best.
I would have to say that a Toyota Corolla / Nissan Versa / Ford Focus are probably going to be the best bets. Versa is relatively new on the market so you may have to go back to the Sentras, but plenty of Corollas and Focuses (Foci?) on the market to let you pick the ones with best equipment.
Why not Honda/Acura? Too sporty, known to be teen racer favorites. And Dodge Neons are too "bleh". Lancer (the plain, not the Evo) could be a contender as it only comes in sedan form, but I think Corollas are a wee bit more reliable and more used ones on the market.
I'd suggest that to make the kids responsible for the cars, make them pay for gas AND periodic maintanence (oil changes, all the dealer-required stuff). Only help them pay the catastrophic failures (blown tire, etc.) and buy them AAA membership (associate membership is cheap). And they have to wash them at least once a week. :)

I'd say...no, only because a new car is not a good idea. I don't know a single teen (including myself) that didn't get into at least some small accident, park it in a place where it got scratched, forget some simple maintenance that caused a problem, etc.
Better to start with something a little less expensive at first - you can still get something nice, but the insurance costs will be a lot less.

Mitsubishi is a very good car company. But I'd say 8 out of 10 teens totally wreck their first car, so you might want to start with a "practice" car. Something that won't put you in debt if it gets totaled or messed up. Having a car note is no joke.

I would get an older car. When you first start driving, you'll do something...wreck it, dent it, whatever (it happens), so you don't want to spend a ton of money. Buy a used, four-door, not teeny-tiny car (Camry, Chevy Impala/Malibu, Honda Accord, Mazda 6, etc.)...that way, when your friends spill crap in it, puke in it after too much partying, or when you run into the mailbox, or sideswipe the concrete barrier in a parking garage, you won't be quite so upset. After you've had that for a little while, then get a newer car.

In my personal opinion a teen ager that is just learning to drive or has theire drivers lic. should not for any reason have a brand new car. Teenagers do not respect something that is just handed to them like that. Take it from a mother of 3 now adults. If your parents hand you over the keys to a new car then at least respect them and do not race, peel out, cruise main, or anything else that could get yourself in trouble, like drink and drive. Good Luck.

No brand new car is good for a teenage driver, I've had my license for well over 10 years and i wont buy a brand new car because of the depreciation

no ! 2 reasons, 1 insurance will kick you in the wallet pretty hard - 2 - if your in a braodside accident or a rear end accident you will most likely suffer serious injury because of how low to the ground the car is and if insurance does agree to fix it you will have to pay for anything the insurance says is inexcess of book value
