2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up."

Psalm 90:1,3,4 "Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations...You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night."

Peter is trying to tell us in 2 Peter 3:8 that scoffers will come saying "it has been a long time and Jesus hasn't returned." That is why Peter said one day as a thousand years to the Lord because time is nothing to God. God is the beginning and end and God is eternal so time is nothing to God. We are to live in the hope of the Lord's coming. We are to overcome the world and not listen to the atheists who continually tell us that there is no God or lie to us about evolution or science or astronomy. Apostle Paul said it correctly, "Let God be true and every man a liar."

I think you're referring to 2 Peter 3:8

It means God sees time in a way that is not possible for us; a long time to us may be short in God's eternal perspective, and a day that may seem inconsequential to us could be like a thousand years to the Lord.

A day is a day is a day. 6000 years ago a day was 24 hours and even that would have been beyond the technology of the time to measure.

If you are thinking that 2 Peter 3:8 gives creationists an out for the 6 days of creation, it doesn't really. Six thousand years are still not enough to account for the universe.

The passage, in any case, goes on to say that a thousand years are like a day. It is not meant to be a commentary on Genesis, it is meant to be an excuse why Jesus had not come back when he promised that he would during the lifetime of his followers.

It doesn't say that anywhere in the Bible. God is timeless.

I think that God uses days when talking about the Creation to put it in perspective for us so that we can better understand.
