Was at the gym yesterday. The older lady has worked there going on two years and she had said earlier to me: I like working here because of the nice people like you. Have not had any issues with this woman and the other one just started working there yesterday. So later that evening as I was putting on my shoes I overheard her talking smack about me to the younger worker. They did not know that I was on the other side of the wall and apparently she thought since the music was on I would not hear her. What should I have done - confront them or her? Needless to say I am still pissed.

I think I would have addressed her superior.
Workers in a gym should not be talking about any patrons/members that attend the gym. That was indeed unprofessional.
Tell her superior, have him question the other worker before confronting the older lady.
Apparently the older woman sounds like she wants to cause trouble...bring it to a halt before it goes any further.

Wow, tough one. I'd say, first, be very nice to the new worker, so she knows that you're a nice person and the older woman is a gossp. Then, you could say to the older woman, if you want, "Hey, I overheard you and I know what you said. That wasn't nice." Or you could decide to let it go. Or you could tell the older woman's boss or the gym owner. You have a lot of alternatives. However, you should ask yourself why it matters to you at all? Was it because she lied when she said she liked you?

I would've confronted her no problem. Of course, I certainly wouldn't have been rude to her, but I would've just asked her politely why she would have told you earlier that you were a nice person, and then say later that you're not. I would've just stood there and waited for her to answer. That being said, it's not like you can confront her now that the opportunity has passed. You had a chance right then and there to put a stop to her talking smack about you, but you didn't. All you can do now is just smile and nod whenever you see her, and wait until you overhear her talking bad about you again.
