Nichrome is a trade name for a particular alloy of stainless steel. (Roughly 60% nickel and 40% chromium.) Type 316 stainless is almost exactly the same. Even type 308 or 18-8 can be used in a pinch, though they won't last as long because they contain iron which freely oxidizes when hot. Go to your local hardware store and see what you can find. If you can't get 26 AWG don't worry too much. You can easily compensate by adjusting the length of your wire. Here's a handy rule of thumb. Going "up" two standard gauges (from 26 AWG to 22 AWG) will double the wire's cross-section area and halve it's resistance. To achieve the same resistance you'll need a piece that's twice as long.

Good luck! I had a wonderful science teacher when I was in the seventh grade. I still remember Mr.Quinton's name after 48 years. What you do really does matter!!!!

Go to a thrift store, buy an old (non-working, even) toaster for $1.00. Take it apart and take out the nichrome wire. It may not be 26 ga, but it's better than no nichrome wire at all.

Why do you need specifically 26 gauge Nichrome?

At any rate, you might find it at a Grainger or Graybar electric.

You can definitely get it from McMaster Carr (see link), but you're too late to get an order Fedex'd overnight. You shouldn't have procrastinated!
