You also would take original title and current registration and maybe proof of insurance and state inspection with you to transfer title. The person giving car to you will have to fill out transfer info on title and sign ownership over to you, this is done on back of most titles or from paper work provided from DMV. You can also call your local DMV for instructions and requirements for your State.
Hope this helps

You go to the licensing agency for your state. Bring the title with the seller's release of interest completed. If the car is less than ten years old, the odometer disclosure section on the title needs completed, by both seller/buyer. You will need a bill of sale, or a statement from your friend that they are gifting the car to you, in some states, the car can only be gifted once, so sales tax could be required, depending on your situation. Proof of insurance is required in some states, so you need to get that going before you go to the licensing agency. Good luck.

Take it all to the DMV...your friend has to give you the title he has and sign it on the back...after that just take it to the DMV and they will help you through the rest of the process.

He'll have to sign the title over to you. It should be on the back of it. Then take it to the court house and get a tag (registered) in your name.

Your friend needs to sign the back of the original title and give it to you to take to your DMV. Likely that his signatures needs to be notarized. It is as simple as that!

In Texas you also have to have an application of title transfer. My suggestion would be to go with him to your county courthouse with both of your ID's in hand and take care of it all there.
