I used to have purple highlights on my natural black hair. I have been using L'Oreal Vive for coloured hair ever since I got it done. It has been like... say 7 months and now it appears to be like strawberry-blondish colour since I got it bleached before the highlights by a professional. It actually doesn't look bad, even if some tips or parts of my hair are coming close to no colour.

Not sure if I can even tell if these types of shampoos & conditioners actually work or prolong the colour.

To those who have coloured hair or highlights/lowlights, do you honestly use shampoos & conditioner specificially for coloured hair?? Do you think it makes any difference?? a waste of money??

... just wonderin' what you think, 'cause I was thinking of switching to a different brand that is not made for coloured hair..

forgot to add, that I wouldn't mind using a different one if it doesn't make any difference.

I know this will take awhile but I plan to grow and cut my highlights out. I am fine with what I have now.

First let me start off by saying that shampoo and conditioner made esp. for colored/permed hair do work. However, just because they say it's for that type hair doesn't mean it prolongs the color. Most shampoo for colored hair works on the condition of the hair itself (colored hair needs more moisture than normal hair)...not on the color. The shampoo must specifically say "prolongs color stay" and those that do say that usually come with tints of the color they prolong, like Quantam shampoo line. Quantam carries shampoo for red heads, blondes, and brunettes. There's not many shampoos that would prolong an "unnatural" hair color....take it from someone who knows.

Yet all hope is not lost. A few tips to taking care of dyed hair is to keep away from HOT water. Simply wash hair in luke warm water (or the coldest water possible) to keep from losing lots of color. Also, avoid hours in the sun. Just like paint on a car, your hair can be damaged by the sun rays as well. Definitely use a shampoo for colored hair. When your hair is healthy the color will stay longer. The best shampoo that I've used it Dove intensive care. And a professional tip: If you can get your hands on it, mix ARS protein into all your dye before using it. It comes in liquid form from beauty shows or sometimes it's sold in beauty supplies. It's not really sold to consumers...usually just to professionals. Try looking for it at a CosmoProf.

Shampoos and Conditioners For "Color-Treated" Hair DO WORK But, They Are Not Going To Keep Your Hair From Fading INDEFINITELY. They Just Insure "Minimal" Fading Compared To "Other" Brands/Types. If You Want to Try Another Brand, Go Ahead. Just Because It Doesn't Say It Prevents "Color-Fading" Doesn't Mean It Will Strip Your Hair.

I have yet to find a shampoo and conditioner that help keep color in your hair. The thing about colored highlights is that they're designed to not stay in permanently. That way, you keep buying their products. Color safe shampoos and conditioners are also marketing gimmicks.

your color will fade and do all that you said above after 7 months, no matter what shampoo and conditioner you use! depending on you hair length you should get your hair retouched every 3-4 months to keep a good color!
