He's going into the Guard or Reserves.
Not sure where anyone would get the idea that being a cook would keep him out of Iraq, though. Soldiers have to eat, wherever they are. And cooks don't just cook food. They manage the supply chain for all food for the troops. There are plenty of "cooks" counting and distributing MREs on the front lines.
Soldiers are all combat soldiers first. Their MOS comes second in wartime.

Your friend is going into the National Guard or the Reserves. Both train one weekend a month and two weeks during the summer.
There is certainly a need for cooks in Iraq. His best bet is to get assigned to a unit that just returned from Iraq or Afghanistan; at least that unit will not go again for a while.
But that will not be a guarantee that he won't go. The reserves and Guard will frequently reassign Soldiers who are short in one unit to another to fill vacancies for units that are going overseas. The good news is that they are trying to do less of this, but it still happens.
If you're concerned about your friend's safety, you can be pretty glad he's going to be a cook. Infantrymen and other combat arms Soldiers will be outside the gate, patrolling frequently. A cook may sometimes have guard duty or another semi-dangerous task, but it is really rare for a cook to go into harm's way regularly.
Cooks in Iraq will spend more time supervising contract cooks than they do actually cooking, but this is also the case in the US, too. Most Army dining facilities both here and there have contract cooks who can do the job at less cost than if we were paying enough Soldiers to do it.

If you are a cook you get assigned to a unit if that unit is called to Iraq the whole unit goes even the cooks. When I was in Iraq our cooks went with us and no they didnt cook because we had a company called Brown and Root part of Halliburton cook for us so our cooks ended up on guard duty in the towers or at the gates or driving trucks.

It is a major possibility that he will be sent to Iraq, but he isn't going to be busting down doors or anything like that so that should comfort you a little. Everyone there has a possibilitie of being hurt, but at least he won't be in the direct. I just joined 2 days ago and will be shipping out in July, I will be an air traffic controller. I know I will be sent to Iraq and MIGHT have to use a gun and I will be in a dangerous place, I also know that being just out on the streets isn't safe... but look at what I am doing it for... America. Some people don't realize the seriousness of the radicals there, something needs to be done to protect the US from terrorism. Tell your friend congratuations and that you are proud of them, because they will be proud of them self.

Cooks in the Guard or Reserves can be called up with their unit to go to Iraq, when their time comes. Cooks DO NOT cook for the soldiers in Iraq. KBR does all the cooking, etc... Cooks are reassigned jobs such as Convoy Drivers, Guard duty, etc.. Anywhere, they may need them most.

The one weekend a month thing is the reserves. Just because he is a cook doesn't mean he won't be deployed. Someone needs to cook for the soldiers that are there right now, right?

Yeah, a cook will go. And if its the National Guard there's even more of a chance that he's going.
