i have a 1990 cherokee 4.0L and when i tow my very light camper (900lbs.) it seems to pull so easy i want to keep it in overdrive, the manual says for towing i should be in 3rd. i also have a power trany button and im thinking i could just use overdrive with this power tranny button on. im going for best posible gas mileage but want to make sure im not doing any damage to the transmition. i understand when im bucking a strong wind or pulling a steep hill its 3rd gear allways butt i was woundering if o.d. would be ok for pulling this in normal driving conditions and not over 60 mph. what are your thoughts? thanks in advance.

Use overdrive. That recommendation in the manual is just when you have a bigger load (ie. 1500lbs+) the 4.0 has enough torque it will not be able to tell that it is on there, keeping it in 3rd is just a waste of gas. 900lbs isn't too much weight, think of it like this. You have 5 people in the car that each weigh 175lbs. That equals about 875lbs. Now would you turn od off when you have that many people in the car? 900lbs isn't really too much.

Overdrive is purely yet another kit extra to the tranny. For years automatics had 3 speeds, a million 2 and then force. Then got here overdrive a 4th kit. This facilitates keeps the RPMs decrease on an identical time as nonetheless doing an identical speed. So if the motor vehicle initially exchange into doing 55mph at 3000 rpms now it may be doing fifty 5 at 2000rpms{occasion purely each and each motor vehicle varies}

Since your towing a very light load there wouldn't be much of a strain on the transmission if you used overdrive, if you start climbing hills or stop and go traffic I would lock out the overdrive, and just use it while cruising.

Definately do not use overdrive. The manufacturer knows best in situations like that. The torque converter is not made to take that kind of stress (IE any extra) and the truck is also using engine braking when not in OD to help slow the extra weight.
