Yes, it's pretty standard. We head it off by giving the kids some amodium after the first instance. That way they dont get often have a second. If they do we give them another does and some cheese. They almost never have a third.
Of course if they all happen at daycare then you're just up a creek and have to take the next day off work to watch the kids.
However, for the past year the kids have been taking vitamins daily hae have not gotten sick once. we give them nutrilite vitamins which are a little pricey as they're all natural and totally organic but our medical bill dropped by a thousand dollars for the year and we didn't have to miss any work to watch sick kids so the price is definately worth it.

You need to figure out what is causing the diarrhea if it is happening so often. He could have a sensitive stomach, or be allergic to a certain food.
I have worked in daycare. The 24 hours gives a child a chance to get better and hopefully stop spread if the illness is contagious. Would you want to work all day with 9 toddlers in diapers who all had diarrhea?? There is no way to tell if you son has a virus or it is something he is eating which is why he is sent home until it stops or you have a doctors note.
Good luck and I hope he feels better!

if daycares didnt take these sort of measures then everyone in the facility would get into a cycle of getting each other sick!
just like some schools have to shut down during the flu season because so many students and teachers are circulating the virus.
around here they have sick-daycares....at the hospital they have a nursery where you can take your sick children who have been barred from daycare for the day. it is a bit expensive ($35/day) but it is a lifesaver for parents who just CANNOT miss any more work.
maybe there is something in the area like that for you.
have you talked to his DR about his occasional diarreah? perhaps there are certain foods his stomach doesnt take too?

Yes, unfortunately. They require a dr's not just b/c there's so many stomach viruses that go around (and there's 3 of them this year so far), so they want to protect themselves as a business as well as the other children. Unfortunately, children are very susceptible to these stomach viruses and they can do a lot of damage to their little bodies! (My nephew was just in the hospital a couple of wks ago TWICE b/c of the constant vomiting and diarrhea. He suffered major dehydration.) Also, each child reacts differently to this virus and it can hit some harder than others. Usually, just a phone call to the doc's office isn't that big of a deal and they're usually pretty good about writing a note so you don't have to pay for a sick visit. Sometimes we just have to grin and bear it, but I would definitely bring up the problem w/ the doc if it's happening fairly often. He may be lactose intolerant or have some other underlying problem that needs to be addressed. Your son may have some sort of food allergy that you don't know about and this is his body's way of removing the toxins from itself. Maybe w/ a little medication, it can work itself out and you won't have to worry about this anymore. Good luck!

If it is the GI bug and it is hard to tell I would keep them home. Why would you want to risk infecting the other children? But You are the Mom and Moms knows best so and I understand. Some kids just have a allergic reaction to a food. Sometimes adults get loose stools with no other symptoms. I would just get a note from the Doc. Hang in there daycare is just protecting themselves from irrate parents.

When my son was in daycare we had to deal with that for everything from diarreah to fevers. They just don't want to run the risk of one child making all the others sick. At first I saw it as an inconvenience but then I realized that I'd want them to do the same thing to keep my child healthy if another was sick.

Yeah. I have 2 kids, both under 2. When my oldest started daycare, she kept colds. She missed at least 1 or 2 days a week.

Yes, You need to talk to them. They are just being lazy. As long as they dont have a feaver then they should be aloud to return. Of course, I would look at their policy on this....It may state it in there that they cant. Its a stupid rule but what can you do. Your at their mercy. If this is their policy, look around for another daycare. I have seen them do this when they are short staffed. They want to find kids they can send home.

Yes, we had one daycare that was terrible with this stuff. She sent our son home one day with chickenpox , that were two mosquitio bites. Our new one is great, and does send home if a reason, plus if they're sick, your kid just wants to be at home taking it easy.
Unless your bf-ing, which normally then has runnier ones, this policy is pretty normal. It sucks sometimes for work, but would you want other contagious kids giving your kids stuff?

How old is your child. We had to pull my son from day care alltogether at around age 7 months, because when we switched from breast milk to formula he got diarrhea. (its opposite of what usually happens with a switch) The staff swore he had to have a virus to have so many runny diapers. We took him to the pediatrician several times before discovering that he was missing an enzyme in his tummy to digest formula. Breast milk was fine because all babies are hardwired to take their mothers milk. We had to switch him to soy formula. He is now three and drinks whole milk just fine.
Good Luck and God BLess
