How did the Quran understand the nature of the sky?
How is it possible for a book to understand the nature of the sky, that is not possible. Humans understand the nature of the sky, and this we put in books. Almost all religious writings suffer such a defect, which is the lack of knowledge available to its writer.
An example:
The Bible 1 Samuel 2: 8
He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he has set the world upon them.
*
Apparently the pillars of the earth are The Lord's and he
has set the world upon them. In addition the poor
and the beggars are still with us.
The Bible Genesis 1: 7 - 8
So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning, the second day.
*
Such is the definition of " sky ", if we are looking to the religious books to enlighten us. Writers are naturally restricted by the knowledge available to them. Good thing that our sky doesn't depend on all of that. We wouldn't want the sky falling on our heads.
Have a pleasant day.

These were things that Allah was saying to show his omnipotence and mercy. Most of it is also said by Yahweh in the Old Testament.
I think some of the Christians online can verify the similar passages in the Bible.
Does anyone know them, offhand?
Al rahman [55:7]: And the heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the Balance.
Al Ghashia [88:18]: And at the heaven, how it is raised?
Al Ra'ad [13:2]: Allâh is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that you can see. Then, He Istawâ (rose
above) the Throne (really in a manner that suits His Majesty). He has subjected the sun and the moon (to continue going round)! Each running (its course) for a term appointed. He regulates all affairs, explaining the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in detail, that you may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord.
Al hajj [22:65]: See you not that Allâh has subjected to you (mankind) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the heaven from falling on the earth except by His Leave. Verily, Allâh is, for mankind, full of Kindness, Most Merciful.

The 7 skies stated are honestly the seven layers of surroundings. There you pass (from backside to best): a million. Troposphere two. Stratosphere three. Mesosphere four. Thermosphere five. Exosphere 6. Ionosphere 7. Magnetosphere So, you spot? Aren't they seven? Now, we could speak approximately seven layers of Earth: a million. The outer center two. The lessen mantle three. The higher mantle four. The D" layer five. Transition area 6. Continental crust 7. Oceanic crust Aren't they seven too? I do consider that there are verses which say approximately seven skies and 7 earths. They are honestly the layers. Hence, that is the reply for your venture. But the ignorants will under no circumstances consider. Sorry, however neither you'll ever.
