losing weight fast is not a good way to go. First of all, it is unhealthy. Second of all, you will regain all of the weight once you resume your normal eating habbits, and third, if you lose too much too fast you will not look good. you will look flabby. The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to completely change your lifestyle. Eat nutritious foods without a lot of refined carbs, sugars, or fats, and eat less calories than your body naturally metabolises. Exercise a few times a week, and you should be good. Don't lose more than 2 pounds a week after the first couple months, though

Your "fatness" will be a combination of your genetic predisposition to retain body fat and your calorific intake and usage.
It really is very simple - your body needs a certain amount of energy (often meazsured in calories) from the food you eat to be able to function and maintain itself at any given amount of body mass. You burn energy by moving - muscles use energy like an engine uses petrol.
If your overall energy intake is greater than your overall energy expenditure, you will gain mass - as the energy is stored because it has not been used.
If your energy expenditure is greater than your energy intake, you will lose mass, because your body will start to burn it's reserves in store - either in adipose (fat) or muscle tissue.
That is why you need to both exercise and monitor your diet.
It is generally accepted that an upper limit of around 2lbs/1kg per week of weight loss is a sensible and realistic target - although this is an average and very obese people who first make an effort to start losing weight will do so more rapidly and people who are only slightly overweight and already active will see less dramatic changes.
As a quick rule of thumb, you should aim to increase your activity levels to burn about an extra 500 calories a day and decrease your food intake by about 500 calories a day to achieve this level - again that's an average, so not neccessarily that accurate for you personally.
For the love of everything good, don't go anywhere near Atkins if you value your health - the only pity about that man's death was that he didn't hang aroundf quite long enough to start getting sued by those he had caused a lot of damage to with his insane diet plan. Complex carbohydrates are the mainstay of the healthy human diet and should make up around 60-65% of all the food you eat. The human body is essentially , an amalgamation of several chemial reactions all going off at once to result in a certain balance. Do not f@ck around with chemical balances - things go wrong!
Anybody who tells you you can lose loads of weight very quickly is trying to sell you something - and it's probably the kind of thing you really don't want to be putting in your body (like overdosing on caffeine as suggested by some nobber above).
There are a lot of websites available for dietary requirements and you should go to your local gym for advice on starting an exercise programme.
Good luck.

If you try and loose it fast you will probably just put it back! Slow and steady wins the race.
Drop to 1,500 balanced calorie diet with plenty of fruit and veg.
30-40 minutes of vigorous exercise 4-5 days a week, that's all there is to it.
There are no quick fixes,No special diets,no herbal/dangerous/illegal drugs, no supplements that will fix it for you. The main reason people don't succeed in sustained weight loss is they don't get off the couch.

Eat a 300 calorie breakfast and a 300 calorie dinner. Then have 7 snacks throughout the day of 100 calories each. You're eating ALL the time and dont get hungry. And it all adds up to just 1300 calories per day. Exersize as well. Good luck!

find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter your stats, take 300-400 calories off that number and that's how much you need to lose weight.
5-8servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water a day
5-6 small meals instead of 3 big ones (breakfast is the most important - make sure to get complex carbs like whole wheat bread, oatmeal, fruit etc)
4-6 times a week cardio for 30-50min, light weight training, many reps
no junk food, no sodas, no alcohol, no white flour (cakes, cookies, white bread, pasta etc.), nothing high in sugar (ice cream)
