I would find out if they will do a payment plan with you, and if they will just talk to the vet and see if they would be willing to take donations for your dog to help pay for the surgery. Some vets really care about the animal and will do anything to help. Definitely dont put the dog to sleep because you cant afford it. The dog cant help that you cant afford surgery for her. When you get a dog you take on that responsibility to take care of the dog regardless of whether there are emergencies or not. Go online see if anyone would be willing to adopt the dog and take on the expenses to save the dogs life.

Sorry to hear about the poodle.
You need to have a talk with that vet. First of all, ask what is the 900 charge for. And if that 900 is part of the surgery operation, if you decide to have surgery. If that is the case, it might mean you just need to cough up an extra 100 to cover for it. If not, then I'm sorry about the 1900 you have to spend.
Ask the vet what is the chance of her surviving the surgery, and if she could live a fairly normal life after the surgery. There's no point going through the surgery if she's going to suffer in the long run. But if she's going to be okay, talk to your vet about your situation and see if they can arrange installment payments. You can pay them little by little monthly I guess. Hopefully him/her being a vet would mean he/she have real compassion for animal, and for helping animals.
Pool up donations from your friends and family members. 10 bucks from one, 5 from another and so on. That can be your downpayment to gain the vet's trust.
Hope you sort it out. Please don't resort to putting her to sleep unless there's really nothing to be done.
Good luck.

Ohhhhh dear, this is a terrible situation.
I always say I would NEVER put an animal to sleep over question of money, I just couldn't live with myself. But then, I've never had a really expensive thing happen to a vet - but then, all my animals have been insured.
If I was you - and I'm not so this is just an opinion - I'll beg, borrow and scrape the money together. Credit card? Also find out if the surgery can be done cheaper anywhere else! Discuss the money problems with the vet, they often help because they want to see the animal fixed too. Also find out what the dog's quality of life will be after surgery - and in fact if the surgery is definitely going to fix things.
good luck,
Chalice

Talk with the vet, tell him the situation. Ask him what is likely to happen if she doesn't have the surgery. You need all of this information to make an informed decision.
Euthanasia is sometimes the kindest choice. It is better to euthanize than to have her suffer through the rest of her life, and possibly never heal correctly. Euthanasia can be a very brave and kind choice in some cases.
It's okay to let your vet know there are money concerns. Not many people have $900 to spend of veterinary care, and the surgery will probably be more than that. Have him give you all the options to help you make your decision.
I"m sorry you're having to make this difficult decision. My best to all of you.

I'd look around you're local vets, see who's willing to do it for the lowest cost, but who still has a good rep. If you cant afford it try getting a loan, whatever, friends, a bank, family etc. Also, if you feel uncomfortable asking for one or that just doesn't work, I'd try to give her away to a family that may be willing to pay for the surgery and keep the dog afterwards. This is probably unlikely, but you can also try giving him/her to an animal rescue program. Good luck

if she will survive and live a long life then I would go for the surgery, you already have to pay the 900 anyway, why pay for a dead dog? I had to take a loan out of $3500 for my pets when they ate something they shouldn't have! If you REALLY can't afford it then don't do it. No need to put yourself at a disadvantage.

you may want to look into another vet or an organization that sponsers animals. Some places will pay for the vet bill up front and have you work off the debt. Ckeck around your area or ask your vet if they know of any such places. Good luck.

no... talk to your vet because I was watching Animal Planet one time and there was like this vet intern show on and this family could not afford a life-saving surgery for their dog and the vet had the interns call around to local animal shelters to see if they would help pay for it, they found enough shelters to donate money for the complete surgery, the family didn't have to pay a dime.... please talk to the vet, don't put the poor dog to sleep

Do you or the owner of the other dog have insurance? Because you could go down that route or you could speak to your vet, they be able to come up with some sort of payment plan for you. Good luck
