I was planning to go up to town. Dress as a priest, just for the hell of it, got a black shirt and clerical collar. But is that actually against the law?

I would not think so. If it were against the law, then that would be the government passing a law that favored religion. That is prohibited.

That being said, it would not suprise me if laws like that were on the books. All sorts of illegal laws are on the books. Most of them are ignored, but sometimes a police officer will dust one off and try to use it. Then it has to go thru the courts and get struck down.

I second the point that Skepsis makes below. If a person went and was asking for donations while dressed as a priest but was not actually a priest, that would be considered fraud. It would not even matter if you did not say that you were a priest. Just the outfit alone would be a basis for fraud in this case.

I don't think so. I had a friend once who would do this on occasion while his mother dressed as a nun. It was probably inappropriate, but this was years ago and all in good fun.

It is illegal to commit fraud. You can dress any way you like that the people around you will tolerate. But if you ask for donations, you're in trouble.

It's not against the law, but it's dumb and offensive.

Nope. I think impersonation is only illegal if someone is hurt by it, or it's used to do something illegal.
