We started giving our older son a pillow when he was about 2 1/2. He's been sleeping with his stuffed dog since he was about 2 though (uses him as a pillow). My younger son will be 21 months next month, and he also has a large, fluffy stuffed dog. I put it in bed beside him, and he wakes up every morning with it behind his neck--like a pillow or neck roll. :)

I think he is old enough to sleep with a pillow, but if he doesn't need it after he falls asleep then don't give it to him. It's much better to sleep without one anyways. So don't worry about it.
He'll let you know I'm sure when the time comes..
Good luck.

It should be okay now if it's a firm pillow. I made a small one for my son that he used at that age. I didn't put a pillow case on it either. He's 8 now and I still check several times a night to make sure he's not face first in his pillow.

2 is fine. The concern is when they are little and cant lift things off their head. My son will be 2 in April and doesn't have one, because he sleeps fine without one. However he cuddles up with his stuffed animals and sometimes uses one of them as a pillow.

He is fine with a pillow now. Its the first year and a bit that you need to worry. He is nearly two, so his brain can 'register' that there is a problem breathing, and he will instinctively move his head, even though he is asleep.

I think 2 is about the right age--my friends daughter sleeps with one now, she will be one in April.
& she tosses the pillow out of the crib when she's finished with it, lol -so to you naysayers--no comments about suffocation.

As long as he can lift his head, he totally can sleep with a pillow!

Look for one of those small travel pillows. They are the perfect size for toddlers and they are not fluffy and plump. They make zip-on pillowcases for them also, so that the cases fit really snug. He would probably do okay with one of those.

He's old enough to leave it with him, they can sleep with a pillow as soonas they are able to move themselves or the pillow away if they want to.
