My dog hurt her leg or paw when running outside today. Not sure if she stepped on something, pulled a muscle, or got bit. She will not put any weight on it and seems sensitive when I touch it. Am wondering if I could give her something from home for possible pain/swelling?

Thanks for all your help! I just called the vet and will be taking her in about an hour to be examined.

One can treat a dog that has arthritis for pain because the cause is known. To treat a dog for pain and swelling when you don't know the cause is not the thing to do. If your dog isn't putting any weight on the leg and it isn't any better after a short period of rest, to the vet you should go. Could be only a sprain, but it could also be broken. In that case giving the dog an aspirin wouldn't really solve anything. Dogs don't feel pain like we do. They don't think about it. If there is no improvement after a rest period your dog should be checked.

Dogs can take aspirin but it's best to have it checked by the vet. If there is a small fracture or splinter that could become infected or something you don't want to miss it. Examine her thoroughly and if she's still limping in a day (or less!) take her to the vet.

It's very rare for a dog to limp for very long after a minor injury, so limping for an extended period is something to have checked out.

Only give her what the veterinarian recommends.

Take her to the vet at once before that wound becomes something more serious.

She is your responsibility and if you had a child who was injured like that you would bring the child to the vet at once.

Your dog is also a member of your family.

Weeeell, you can give child's dose of aspirin if you're that opposed to getting it checked at a vet, but if it isn't completely cleared up by, say, day after tomorrow - vets for sure. If she was outside she could have something stuck in her paw - grass seeds are the worst for it, they're barbed and they work their way in deep, causing hideous swelling. Keep a close eye!

You could give her a buffered asprin (half a tab every 4 to 6 hours) If it did not go away in a couple of days I would definately contact a vet.

Some dogs can take aspirin, some can't. Just like humans some dogs are allergic to it. I had a friend gave aspirin to one dog, no problem, gave to the other and it got sick and died. Too big of a risk to try if you ask me. Call your vet!

Talk to a Vet about it (call them up) and talk to them about the problem your dog is having and see what you can do for your dog.
I wouldn't give your dog anything from home for pain, they can't take the things we humans take for pain, because it can kill them.
call a vet and see what you can do, thats the best you can do right now.

When it comes to administering any medication whether it be for human or animal it is in the best interest ,of the animal in this case, that you contact a vet. Some medications can be seriously harmful to animals and not for humans.

NEVER give your dog something intended for human consumption, the dose rates are competely different for animals, they metabolise things differently than humans. Contact your vet for advice they will prescribe medication suitable for his size, breed etc.
