Great name. :-)
As someone said before, only his friends' parents would be likely to get the reference to Neverending Story, if that's where you indeed got it.
I mean, think about it, with names like Lucretia and Apple floating around these days, name your child whatever you like. With all the unique names now, it probably wouldn't seem that out of the ordinary.

Atreyu is the name of the boy from "The Never Ending Story." It is also the name of a band. And yes, I would probably make fun of a kid named Atreyu before making fun of a kid named Jason. I think you should think about the kids well-being growing up while you are in the process of picking out a name. You aren't doing him any favors by loading up bully ammo before he even leaves the gate.

All kids get teased about something. If you named him Sam, he would be teased because of his hair or his teeth. I don't think Atreyu is a bad name, and by the time he reaches school age, most kids probably won't get the reference.

Edit: Gah, looks like kids don't get the reference now! *lol* Are you drawing inspiration from the book, the movie or the band?

What's in a name?

If it has special meaning, significance, or you just really love it, I wouldn't think twice about it if I were you.

Gweneth Paltrow named her kid "Apple". I think that is nuts personally, but with the world being so global these days, there are tons of new names from every culture and religion out there. I think pretty much is accepted now a days.

Good Luck with your choice, I really like Atreyu myself.

That's the name from that movie The Neverending Story! Kids are always going to find something to tease about, so I wouldn't worry so much about that. I would think the parents would get teased more. Parents' friends and teachers will probably make fun of he parents either to their face, behind their back, or both. What are those parents thinking? It's like naming your kid Hansel O.

If I knew an actual person named Atreyu, I'd never ever ever cease with the Neverending Story jokes. For example, "Hey, Atreyu! Hows the hunt for the purple buffalo going, jack-a$$?!?!?!" Lol.

it seems these days that the odd names are the more popular ones and the traditional names aren't. i like the name, but then i don't. there is no telling with kids these days if the child will be teased, but like i said the unusual names are more common. personally i don't think the child will be teased... GO FOR IT!

when i see that name i think of The Neverending Story, one of my favorite movies ever when I was a kid, but I am not sure I would name my child that, he would probably get teased, but most kids do these days at one time or another, no matter what.

Great name! Is his middle name gonna be Bastian?!

I would tease you if you named him something like Dylan or Brandon, or whatever names tv/music make popular with the trashy masses.

If you name him Atreyu after the band, then yes, if I was your friend, I would make fun of you.
