You need to get out of the L.A. basin. There are just too many people. The streets are too busy.

Yes, yes, your teen will need to drive in them eventually, but one step at a time.

I agree find an unused parking lot to gain familiarity with the automobile itself... but then it'll be time to get familiar with roads, and nothing but roads will do.

I recommend little-used roads, like an industrial park on a Sunday, or as skill improves, back canyon roads.

I can't recommend the Pacific Coast highway because it's too busy its whole length, and anyway I can't know what you mean. The PCH is a different kind of road in Long Beach than in Laguna Beach than in Huntington Beach.

One wrong move on the Pacific Coast highway and you go off a 400 foot cliff. Go north, toward Mojave or somewhere flatter.

Drive around school parking lots on weekends. It's private property so you can't get arrested for driving without a license... At least that's what my driving instructor said. You might have to check the laws in your state or something.

Go to a large parking lot at like 3 in morning when it's completely deserted.

well, if you live in Los Angeles, it would be best for your teen to learn to drive in traffic...I learned on Sunset Blvd, that prepared me for just about anything in LA...or you can take them out to newhall, valencia, etc...the roads are never crowded out there
