Once I have prepared my laundry bag Billy likes to stick his head in and grab the first white sock he can find. He grabs it and starts meowing in this deep strange manner (like a cat in heat would sound). Then he jumps over the safety gate with the sock in his mouth, walks by the kitchen, drops it, keeps meowing while he's staring at it. What does this mean?? What is he doing?

Always a dirty sock.

Your SCENT is on that sock. Cats and dogs are very scent-oriented.

Your cat loves you -- he also loves the scent on your sock because it is YOUR scent.

Some cats and dogs actually take dirty laundry and bring it into the bedroom -- why? Because the scent on the dirty laundry is the same as the scent in the bedroom -- isn't that where we spend much of our time at home -- the bedroom. So they take the dirty laundry into the bedroom they "reconcile" the scents and put all those scents in one place.

Maybe he has caught the scent of other cat or animal, that does not live with you, on your socks. He may feel threaten by it. Maybe he feels that he is helping you out by getting you to wash that sock first. It could also be that he is bringing you a gift like a dog would bring back a ball when you throw it. Just be thankful its only the sock. LOL

LOL That's hilarious, my cat does the exact same thing.....we'll hear her meowing that deep meow and when we look at her, she has a ball or a sock in her mouth! I've figured it out though--when they do that, they're bringing us a "gift", kind of like a contribution to the household! Don't forget to praise him when he does this!

Billy is tapping into his instinct. He is play hunting. The guttural noise you describe is something wild cats do when they capture prey in the wild. It's a game that lets him behave naturally. Don't be concerned.

He's a cat, who knows?? It sounds entertaining to watch though. I don't know- it could be a number of things... The smell of the deodorant in the detergent may trigger this behavior.

my cat sometimes does the same thing-i think they think of it is a some sort of hunt that they are proud of-especially on cold days when i don't allow my cat to go outside-she will do that-hope this helps some!
